Anyone come across

Re: Now it can be told . . .

On 7 July last year I was bashing towards Beaulieu Entrance on my way to a club rally at Bucklers Hard when, at about 1700 hrs,without any change in engine revs or temperature the boat slowed down and started to drift into the shallows (wind SW 5/6).
I anchored in <2m depth and stood on the foredeck making the slow arm-waving signal for distress.
A Merry Fisher leaving the river waved back and carried on as did a larger MOBO who tooted his horn!
Returning to the wheelhouse I called Solent CG and advised them of my situation to be asked if I had attempted to attract attention. No comment!
A yottie coming downriver heard me and radioed assistance but I warned him it was probably too shallow.
Then alongside appeared the Venturers RIB; about to close down (their mooring is off Lepe beach) they strapped alongside and took me in tow, putting a crew member on board who asked me where I wanted to go.
Doubting the resources at Bucklers Hard (sorry Agamemnon) I opted for the Hamble and at 1840 they turned about and proceeded to Port Hamble where we arrived at 2015.
The young Venturer, who had taken off her skid lid to reveal long blonde hair, looked rather miserable and eventually asked to use my mobile to tell Mummy she'd be late for the party.
"Whose Party?" I enquired.
"Mine" said Natalie. I'm fourteen today"
Gobsmacked I was!

Much later:

1 Replaced seized gearbox and added alarm;
2 Fitted 2 cleats at bow to augment single bollard;

Incidentally, Seastart will only take you to nearest port - I checked.
Well done Venturers.

Re: Now it can be told . . .

I am absolutely going to check my logbook, 'cos I hope to God the Merryfisher wasn't me. Put my mind at rest: was it a small (ie 625) one and did it have a green canopy thingy over the cockpit? I gots to know! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Very commendable of course that a group would set up dedicated to "Helping People and Animals in Danger or Distress on Land and Sea". (From their web site).

In fact there's nothing to stop anyone from going out in a boat and looking to help other people.

Like the majority of rescue boats in the Solent these guys are not RNLI, receeive no help or funding form them and are self financed.

But, bear in mind several things. Unlike the rest of the independants. They are not declared to Solent as a resource, nore are they allowed to use VHF CH 0. Hence they are not gtenerally tasked by Solent to an incident. They will offer to assist and Solent will often task one of the declared boats to take over when appropriate. This is exactly what would happen if anyone spotted a problem of heard a call for assistance and offered to help.

Part of the reason is the age of the people on the boat. I for one would not want to send a young teanager out to deal with a fatality.

This is not a criticism but simple a statement of what they are and are not. The rest of the independants are declared resouces to Solent CG.
