anybody tried \"Skype\" yet?

I was pointed in the direction of it the other day and I will find it usefull!
It is a Free telephone service between computers. all you have to do is download the free programme off the web www.skype. com and provided you have a phone facility on your box, ie speakers and headphones. away you go. You can even telephone non computer numbers if you are prepared to pay something like a pence + a minute, it works all over the world not just locally..

Yeah! Right I feel like the guy in the specsavers adds with the two for one deal. You have all heard of it OK????

One down side to it is. I guess subscribers troll for new members and I got what sounded like a dominican or carribean "lady") selling crack so I zapped her oh! yes you have a magic button to use and you can ban people too as well as not having to answer if you dont want to (there goes the mother-in-law) worth a look for you long distance sailors/ business men??? Regards
Rob

Re: anybody tried \"Skype\" yet?

Had it for a few months now, many of my work mates have it along with a number of friends, I find it very useful, the instant messaging is useful as well.

I have it on my laptop so don't need add on Mic and speakers as already built in.

Here is the link to Skype if anybody wants to try it

Its absolutely brilliant! I moved to Canada last year and now have all my family in the UK and many of my friends on it. Call quality is outstanding & computer to computer its free. I also use the Skype out service where you buy credit (in Euro's) & can call normal landline numbers from your computer. Call charges transatlantic on Skype are Euro Cent 1.7 per min which is under 3 cents Canadian (or about 1.2 p) vs 15 cents Canadian from our telephone company for the same call.

I have it installed both on home PC and Laptop. With the home PC a ten buck plug in microphone serves well but the laptop (IBM thinkpad) is even better. With the built in microphone and speakers its just like using a handsfree phone. I might well buy a proper phone handset though for home use - there are several available.

Yup,

been using it since we moved to Spain - brilliant; has the facility, at very minimal cost, to call PC to mobile/fixed phone.

It tells you how many users on-line. 2 months ago it was just over a million and now it's regularly 1.7 million.

It has conference call facility so how many forum members can we get talking on one call?

Our Skype names are in my bio.

V1.1 is now available with multi chat facilities.

I put in 10euros last November, use it all the time for all my long distance stuff when abroad (much the cheapest), and only just had to put in another 10 euros even though extensively used.

The fact that you can call ANY landline is great.

Headphones with mic are best though. The echo with built-in mic and speaker is just too much.

Also watch out for some hotel firewalls which seem to work BUT the delay makes the experience bad.

Don't know how we conducted business before 'Skype'. We use it regularly for conference calls all over the world. Can't praise it enough. It is also encrypted which makes it secure, but unpopular with some government agencies.
