Anybody have a Seagull 40+ outboard and a digital vernier caliper handy?

Hi folks, I have a 40+ shortshaft with a villiers carb. The black plastic inlet end for the carb managed to vibrate off, it must have been slack. It wont run without it, as it chokes the air flow into the carb for the correct mixture. I have made a new piece, but I just need to know the hole diameter in the center to get the right mixture. Can somebody measure it for me please if it aint too much trouble so I can drill out my replacement and get my old engine running sweet again. Thanks.:o

Mine sounds the same as you describe. The hole in the choke lever is 5/16" dia. There is also a semi-circular cut-out on the edge to clear a small air-way moulded in the plastic.
BTW, an Amal carb. on another 40 in my garage has a hole of 1/2", so perhaps it's not too critical.

Its not the actual choke lever thats missing, but a black plastic flange shaped bit that screws onto the inlet of the carb. The engine runs, but wont run at full revs unless I choke it with the proper choke about a third covered. From memory, the hole was around 15mm diameter?

0.775" it is - but it is not a clear bore. It has a lump in the moulding at the bottom of the bore. Better to obtain the proper bit rather than try and make your own. Ship and ha'pth of tar comes to mind.

The part on the right ?

"Villiers carb, just sold the last new one. Used Villiers Carbs always available, grubby but complete from £40.00. New/Reconditioned Villiers carbs £75 when available. Fuel lines and cables available too... new and used."

You sure? I mind sticking my finder in the hole and it was completely round.

I have the bit made and the thread turned, just have to drill the hole and the jobs a good ane.........

.

Yes, it's a round hole, the "lump" refered to by Tranona is part of the separate plastic moulding that carries the choke lever. You should still have that, I think.
The bit you're missing is effectively a diaphragm about 1/16" thick.
To my amazement, the thread seems to be metric; 30mm x 1mm, how modern is that!!

My carb aint plastic like the one in the pic above. Its definately metal................
I know theres a small bypass air intake on the bottom of the carb housing itself, this will be the idle bleed bypass, so I suspect this is what Tranona is on about. Yep, the thread is indeed metric!! (or the new thread I cut on the lathe is metric and fits!!)

Yes, that sounds original. Older Villiers carbs did have a metal cowl. Pretty sure the plastic one goes straight on.

Here are pictures of a plastic one off a 1973 Seagull 40+ and metal one with a wire gauze filter off my lawnmower ( pre 1952)

They are interchngeable.
