Anybody had a oil leak from the sump tray ?????????

Haven't been following your other ones so I'm not sure whats been said , but there is usually a gasket between the sump and the engine , has that been checked ?

normally its a cork gasket,, bet your bottom dollar its been done up too tight,,once deformed it needs replacing,,,how did that oil get in to the engine breather ,, our have you now got two problems

The amount of oil dripping out of the breather is only a small amount not enough we thinks to produce the amount of oil underneath the engine
The oil seems to orginate at the top of the sump tray where it joins the engine the rolls down the casing for the fly wheel
This is only speculation any idea how long it would take to redo the gasket on the sump tray

surely your engineer can see the difference between a sump pan leaking and a engine breathing hard,,is the oil running down inside the bellhousing or is it on the engine block,,are both oil preasure gauges reading the same,,if it is the sump pan gasket i doubt if you can remove the sump without ,atleast removing the engine mounts and liffting the engine so the pan will clear the crank,,imho, try some silicone inthe area you think its leaking from ,,if it slows up you know your in the ballpark
you said in your last post the air filter was saturated,,is this still the case

I don't know your engine or your installation, but in order to renew the sump gasket somebody will have to take off the sump, in most engines the crankshaft crankpins rotate into the sump pan itself. meaning that you need quite a distance between the bilges and the sump in order in order to drop the sump down low enough to remove it and replace the gasket. Personnally I would get down there with the approprate spanner or socket, try and tighten all the bolts and see if you can tighten them up a bit more. You should use a torque wrench to avoid overtightening of course.

Its more than likely the rear crankshaft oil seal thats leaking if its running down the bell housing. Sump pans very rarely start leaking unkless they have been disturbed.

Also, any oil leak from the side or front of then engine runs down then often runs along the sump pan joint before dripping off, making it look as though that joint has failed.

Tracking it down can be the very devil - clean everything up first using engine cleaner to get it thoroughly clean, then play spot the oil leak as it reappears.... Be prepared to do this several times before you can be absolutley certain you have found it! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

i wouldnt be hopefull that oil is comming from the breather ,,its the last thing you want,,if you have oil at the rear of the engine at sump height and its in the bellhousing its probably the crankshaft oilseal,,if it is comming from the sump gasket ,do as somebody else says ,,clean and watch,,i think your engines are black if its difficult to see the oil leak,,this may sound stupid but cover the area with talcum powder you will soon spot it ,, dont overtighten the sump ,,you will end up with oil leaks every where,,,i have been drag racing for nearly 20 years ,,i know a few tricks

new sump cover sorts it. or drain all the oil, new gasket and tighten in sequence. If the cover hasn't been tightened properly, it can leak, cos it bends. Cheap git option is to linish/grind the thing flat at your local engineering shop

Yes, I have. It was caused by a leaking Dowty seal washer (aluminium washer with a rubber moulded inner seal) that joins the dip-stick assembly to the bottom of the sump pan.

New Dowty seal - problem solved.

It was a real booger to get to though and to identify the problem the underside of the sump was cleaned thoroughly with rags and solvent and viewed from underneath with a mirror on a stalk. The engine was then started and the oil was viwed weeping from the Dowty seal.

Dowty seals don't just fail though - the reason behind it was that I had the offending engine lifted out at the end of last season to re-build the leg hydraulics and the lift had bent the dip-stick assembly a little and caused the leak.

Sami

One of my engines has had similar leak for ages (VP D3-160)
And mine is more an annoying smear than a serious leak.
I am now reliably informed and confirmed by a friend who owns a Volvo car garage.....
Intercooler has small (2mm) hole to disperse any condensation.
There is a breather hose in the intercooler.
If the breather hose....breaths a bit the oil will fill the pipe in the intercooler which will then eventually come out the drain hole.
VP originally blamed bell housing, then dip stick, then sump nuts, then...

I know they are different engines but i am lead to believe the principal is the same.
Mine should be fixed on Wednesday....watch this space....
