if so, which plane are the rear rubber engine mounts in? do they lie fore and aft like the front ones, or are they athwart the boat ?

having a problem with engine vibration. the mounts now seem sound but there is still a pronounced resonance / vibration at 2600 rpm and above. to the point where you cant use that rev range.

Do you get the same vibration in neutral ?

Alternative causes are the prop shafts and screws themselves

Have you looked to see if you can see vibration on the shafts when under way ?

If you take a SINGLE 240 inspection lamp into an otherwise dark engine bay you may be able to use the 50Hz flicker to see an out of alignment shaft running out of true.

Otherwise borrow a strobe light with a variable frequency

These are cheap but can be of some use
Strobe flash

but these
1 - 60 Hz strobe
are better.

Be careful if you have anyone around with any form of epilepsy, and these can trigger a reaction.

In our Westerly Falcon, the rear engine mounts lie fore and aft. At 2600 rpm, there's a lot of noise and the throttle doesn't go any further than that.

Yep! Our Moody has the 2003 and your diagnosis of engine mounts is probably correct. We had a vibration that was bad above about 1500rpm. Swapped out the rear engine mounts and the forward ones too - even though they all looked OK. Problem solved!! Engine happy to go up through the rev range without vibration. Unfortunately, the engine mounts are not cheap or easy to replace. Before going down that route, check the rest of the drive system. We had a flexible coupling fitted which contributed to the problem as the prop shaft was inadequately supported, amplifying the vibration (I know they should do the opposite, but a previous owner "made" it fit). Is this a new problem or one that has got progressively worse?

thanks everyone. the boat is out of the water and sat on its keels so the shaft isnt rotating. the vibration is bad even without the shaft connected, but with it connected it gets worse still.

someone who should know has told me the rear rubber mounts should sit acrooss the boat. mine are along the line of the hull. there's also a question about 2 types of mountbut its impossible to see the part numbers

For the cost of 4 mounts - replace em. the worst situation is to end up with a broken, or perished mount. I didn't bother on my old Moody & it cost me a new shaft seal that I had only put in the year befor ... So lesson learned I have replaced them on the Dufour, before I had similar problem to yourself, after, runs sweet as a nut. admittedly I was in the process of changing the shaft seal as well, but no problems now revving over 2600.

Direction of mounts?....hmm I am sure the rears are fore to aft, will check next time.

cheers
poter.

Don't know what they are like for supplying parts as they are American. But the drawings are good.
Hope this helps

Thanks for that - its amazing what you can get off the internet these days isnt it?

Shows my boat as having mounts along the fore / aft line, but interestingly the 2002 engine has the rear ones athwartship, so the person helping me seems just to have mixed up his models.

Now all I have to do is to find out which mounts I actually have on my engine!

When are you going back in the water, wont the water support the boat and act as a dampner?also if shes not sitting right on her keels it will put stresses on the hull which will add to the vibration. i would expect a little vibration at 2500 revs.
