Rob Humphreys designed and bigger sister to Élan 333 and Élan 36 so expect will sail very well. My 36 is an absolute delight to sail

Try contacting Jim McGregor owner of Flair IV - see flairiv.com - which has done pretty well in Cowes Week etc. He is very helpful

Jim is the nut on the end of the tiller or holding the wheel oft referred to and could even make a Moody go fast:eek: His daughters are pretty nifty too, look out for them and a Parkstone lass Annie Lush in the 2012 Olympics.

Not sailed any of the Elans but the bigger ones are pretty popular amongst the PYRA go fast set and our club has a few, none of them are cruised mind.

There are various different types and generations of the Elans. I think the Elan 40 is the same generation as the superb Elan 333 and excellent 36/362 - when they were fast but not furious cruiser/racers with Westerly / Moody style practical wood interiors. Also some great practicality - thanks to Bill McKay of Scotland who assisted the yard (they couldn't understand why the Scot was asking for a wet locker!)
More recent Elan's have diverged into two ranges
- a more performance focussed range - such as the Elan410 etc
- a more cruiser / charter oriented range - the Elan Impression
