Looking at this weekend for Thursday overnight crossing to St Vaast, Saturday morning St Vaast to Cherbourg, Sunday Cherbourg to Solent.

Winguru for Sandown SW 20kts & Sunday SW but lot lighter yet looking at Synoptic charts it looks more W with fronts about for whole weekend.

How do others read it?

Second point - always underwelmed by the Alderney Race but noted Robins caution that its wind over tide thats a problem - what say you about Cap Barflour? how far do you stand off? If we go with the tide on Saturday looks like it could be wind over tide going W to Cherbourg.

All advice gratefully received.

Hmmm ... feast or famine at the moment, Its a whopper of a low in the Atlantic! My suspicion is that it may be more rather than less wind with the area of interest being squeezed between the high and low. I've neve found Barfleur that bad compared to CAp de la Hague but I've never rounded it in really crap weather.

As Jimi says you are trying to predict the position and timing of the bottom edge of a bad low. There is also the active front that will be moving south and the associated wind increases. Also the wind will be in line with the channel axis.

Re: Barfleur

She nearly ended up looking at our stern, but I think Richard suddenly noticed we were gaining on him, and adjusted his sail trim a bit. Rather slow, those old Moodies. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Barfleur

Look you lot of children - When I want to race I go racing and when I'm cruising........

I still want to beat everyone!!

Now my excuses this year are ... my sails are 3 years old on a heavily used charter boat....my bum is dirty..... I have inexperienced crew ..... I am a crap sailor - who said that??

The water is a great leveller, I tried to buy my way to the front of the fleet twice in a one class dinghy and it did not work - I had to serve my time!!
