Any way of \'testing\' the anodes?

I'm on a roll here...

(If you don't understand, never mind)

Is there any way of knowing if your anodes need replacing without having to take the boat out of the water or sending down a diver?

Re: Any way of \'testing\' the anodes?

Hmm... I was wondering if I could use one of those weatherproof cameras from Maplin - with 6 built in LEDs! It comes with a monitor, and the whole shebang will run on 12V.

Err, why not just wait 'til the tide goes out? Guess who sails in shallow water & big tides!

Even if you have a "ship on a stick" fin keel, you can lean against a quay wall & just peep over the side.

The tide doesn't go out in my marina.

If you untie those ropes connecting you to the wooden walkway & start the engine you may be able to leave the marina . . . Lots of interesting things happen out there - including stuff like tides!! LOL

Re: Any way of \'testing\' the anodes?

Tides have always bothered me. It's the moon isn't it? When it's up above and all spooky and its gravity is strong enough to suck water up big rivers.

So why don't we also just float upwards too? Into the sky?

It worries me sometimes. Best to avoid it. I'll stay in my marina.

Re: Any way of \'testing\' the anodes?

They do say water ain't the problem, - it's the lumps of rock underneath that you need to avoid!
Sorry for hi-jacking your thread; - as usual, I couldn't resist a cheeky comment or three.

Are you kidding? I love this kind of banter.

Now, anyone got any ideas on any clever ways of testing your anodes? I guess the problem is knowing how much deterioration of any current flow (which must be really tiny anyway) is due to gunk on the anode rather than corrosion...

Re: Any way of \'testing\' the anodes?

I bought for £60 a Maplins colour/bw/infrared (depending on light) camera waterproof to 2 m for 30mins, if I remember correctly, to do this. It runs on 12v and I plug the video into either a laptop or a video camera to see it and record the pictures. Works very well for checking the prop and shaft anode.

Re: Any way of \'testing\' the anodes?

I thought it was just the water running off the end at the horizon. Fortunately, it does come back, and I'm starting to see a pattern.

I'm not going anywere near the horizon though, in case I get sucked off.

Anyone who hadn't read the rest of this thread Pops would think you'd completely lost the plot. Unlike those of us who have the rest of this thread who, uh... think you've completely lost the plot. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think I've got one of those cameras from Maplins - it's intended for home security isn't it? I've been hesitant about actually immersing it in the marina. Would you know what model yours is? Is the info you get from it of any real use? Or is it all blurry?

It was tongue in cheek, based on your earlier post about the tides. I haven't lost the plot, I am well aware of what causes them, even down to why there are mostly two tides a day with only the one moon.

Thanks for that!
