Hi, recently picked up an open launch with a Volvo MD17d. All seems fine(ish) for an old engine, bit smokey but starts and runs well enough. Problem starts when trying to stop it, previous owner pointed to a stop switch on the read bell housing that has broken. not sure if its a pull or push button but as it stands i have to push on the throttle arm to stop it. Not ideal, i could rig a pull cord to the front of the engine box but was wondering if this is an easy fix. would rather not take it apart until i know, no point doing the work to find out it's an impossible job.

cheers

The button you refer to on the top rear of the crankcase is the cold start button. To use this the throttle must be put to 1/2 speed and then the button depressed. It should lock down and its purpose is to allow extra fuel to be pumped to the injectors . As soon as the engine fires this button releases. You may just have a bare button but there were kits to add either solenoid operation or pull cord operation. The link below illustrates the pull cord cold start connected to this button.

The engine IS stopped by pulling the speed lever to zero however to work correctly the speed lever should have a spring device where the throttle cable connects to the speed lever so allowing the speed lever to be pulled against this spring. Usually there is a stop wire also connected through a collar at the end of the speed lever, it is loose in the collar allowing the speed lever to move and a stop collar is attached to the end of the wire which engages with the speed lever when the stop handle is pulled. It sounds as if your engine was fitted without this.

Ah thanks, explains why it can take a little cranking to start when cold. previous owner told me it was the stop button or maybe i misheard and the poorly printed manual looked like it pointed there and called it the stop device. Knowing this I'll just rig up a pull cord to poke out of the front of the engine box, when i get around to building it.
Thanks.
