The install manual for my Perkins says I need API CG-4 or ACEA E3-96, for -10 to 50 centigrade I should be using a 15W40.

Any reccomendations? Or just buy to those specs?

Any pitfalls?

(With the old engines I just poured in what ever cheap 15/40 I could find on the basis I was getting through so much of it, now of course I have somewhat more valuable machinery which I intend to look after)

Your Perkins Phaser based engines have very similar cam/mushroom tappet interface to Cummins B Series which will always be these engines fuse from a lubrication perspective.

On the basis of price, availability, performance I have been bulk purchasing Shell Rimula RT4 15W40, however latest quotes give Total Rubia TIR 7400 15W40 a real price advantage http://www.totaloil.com.ph/B2C-lubHome/diesel-engine/rubia-tir-7400-15w40-ci-4.html.

Both the above have Cummins CES approvals and one specific test in this group is aimed at cam tappet wear performance with high soot loadings therefore will suit your engine admirably.
