Any tips for avoiding Icebergs in the Solent.

If you station a look-out in the crow's-nest with a pair of binoculars and a telephone link to the OOW, and if your vessel is designed to be unsinkable, what could possibly go wrong?

In the Solent don't you just yell "Starboard! I'm racing!" and assume that the iceberg will get out of your way?

Bramble Bank

Mention this and my mind goes back to the time when HMS Redpole, the training ship of the RN navigation school, ran hard aground at half speed while two instructing officers were rebuking a trainee for using the wrong wording in an engine order.
Not an iceberg in sight.
Now who was to blame?

The rating on the wheel of course. Are you sure you were in the Royal Navy? :D

Sounds more like HMS Troutbridge
"Left hand down a bit".
"Ev'rybody down!

HMS Redpole

Nice cynical response. No, the helmsman did not get the blame, perhaps because an officer under training was at the helm.
It was a long time ago (perhaps 1950, it was just after I qualified) but I think the idiot C.O. justifiably carried the can. What amused me at the time was the evidence that the attention of "responsible" (sic) officers was diverted while the offending trainee was being made to wear a fender round his neck.
Why does service training so often descend to prep school mentality?
I ought to know, but I'm still wondering.
I was dismayed when a retired RN officer organised the RYA yachtmaster courses. Was I right? Is the yachtmaster syllabus any good, or is it a licence for the RYA to print money?
Has the qualification done any good?

Icebergs? What lettuces growing in the Solent?
