I may take a look at a Bayliner 2655 with a GM 6.5L V8 diesel. Clearly this is all subject to survey but...

This boat has been re-engined (I don't think this unit was ever std) and I have always liked that particular GM engine. Any one any thoughts, as the unit was installed in 2000. What about fuel consumption at cruising speed?

Any thoughts as to the boat in question, as it would be used for coastal cruises or the occasional hop to Irelend.

Now that's an important statement....I have heard similar before. Whats the problem? Bad workmanship?

btw, I don't know if it is a Samurai job - but I will find out!

there appear to be mixed views ; and most of the bad stuff is in the conversion requirements rather than the end product - ie. is is not quite the straight forward swap for the Volvo petrol v8 as made out.
If it's in and been run for a couple of years this shouldn't be relevant at all.

I know several people who have had a bad experience with Samurai, one I was speaking to last weekend had suffered a siezed engine for no apparent reason, engine was less than a year old.

The GM engine is an excellent unit with a fabulous reputation, in vehicles, so if the reliability has down down the gurgler? Then it beggars the question, WHY? what has changed, could it be the marinisation????

I agree the GM engine has a great name for industrial engines, the problem is probably a botched marinisation, but if its run this long might be ok. Get an engine survey done and ask if the raw water pump flow rate is suitable same question for the heat exchanger if you ask around someone in your area might sugest a name for a surveyor who knows these engines.
One last thought Samuri also sell second hand engines maybe the failures are some of these. ps the new Mercruiser diesel outdrive is it not the Astra diesel engine marinised its getting a good name and its GM to.

The new Merc diesel is actually an Isuzu diesel used in Astras Vectras, and Opel equivalents.
The GMC diesel is a General Motors design originally for Small trucks, motor homes, HumVees etc. Been around since 60s.

If anyone is interested the 6.5L is going out of production for the new GM Turbo diesel pushing out 300hp which I think is a V8 of an Izuzu collaboration. This engine is so good even our US friends are raving about it. Unfortunately this engine is so popular they can't make enough of them so we won't see marine versions for a while.

Have 1990 2655 wide body and re-engined last year with 240 hp Yanmar/Bravo 3. Am extremey pleased with the set up. Have achieved 32 knots and cruise effortlessly at 22knots and about 6 gph. As I intend keeping the boat no real problems with resale v investment etc. Know people with problems with Samurai conversion - - one option I was looking at over a long period. Probably the same people as longjohnsilver. Might be worth considering - relatively and painless job - not for me!!

The only problem rwith reengine job on this boat is length of engine room - only3 engines I've found can fit in without major surgery. These are: Yanmar, Steyr and at a squeeze the GM.

I see that there is a 1989 wide body 2655 for sale in Windermere (Shepherds I think) in latest boat mag. for £18000, which you would probably get for much less.

Thankyou Mexican. I have received further details on this particular boat and I am concerned that the motor is the normally aspirated 190 HP version. Seems woefully under powered for my liking. It states max speed at 25kts and cruising at 18kts. Whilst I am not a mad b@stard, I do like a fair turn of speed. Your set up sounds ideal - and I'll take a look at the Windermere boat. Cheers.

My 2655 only ever got 26 knots flat out and cruised at 20 knots with 260hp V8, those figures might be a bit optimistic. Forgot to mention earlier - dealers were keen to get business. Got mine supplied and fitted etc for much less than the RRP of the engine. There were big discounts out there last year and would assume similar this year. Any advice please contact me.

Re: Advice needed

On the stern of Blue Fisher I seem to recall!! Hope your hangover has cleared. We had to have another go at it without you last week. Only just recovered. Could be down this weekend though - assumed you were up the hamble playing delivery skipper.

Kev may be down - you were certainly notable by your absence - but we didn't try the bar at the sailing club. Hope to see you at the weekend.
