As a Mac convert, and keen sailor, I've been working on a new community site dedicated to marine computing, with a Mac OS X slant.

Over the next few months I'll be adding a lot more information about compatible hardware and software, as well as guides to various technologies such as AIS, Navtex, marine monitors and NMEA.

Why not have a look at MacSailing.net

And if you have any useful Mac-related information, or use a Mac onboard your boat, please let me know!

Re: Magic...

...and there I was beginning to think I was the only mac'd up sailor around!

I dont use the mac on board - I couldnt bare the thought of crunching a couple of grands worth of Power Book... but I have got an older G3 which I might now consider if I can get the software.

Many thanks for getting the site together, I'm sure it will be a real help.

If you want to keep abreast of latest Mac news, or general Mac OS or hardware help, then this is an excellent site.

They are a bunch of diehard Mac users, many extremely knowledgable, run by the wonderful Binky - Binky used to run some of the Mac forums on Compuserve, and they've just recently escaped and gone public.

Don't expect any help on marine items, but anything else Mac related it's got a wealth of knowledge to pull on, and they post all the latest Mac related news

Great news. I'm using Maxsea (OS9)on an IBook on board, all easy and intuitive.
Multimode from Black cat software is also useful for radio reception and decoding.
GPSNavX looks interesting.

Thanks for the feedback! I knew I wasn't the only Mac sailor around!!

There was a problem with the login, but that's fixed now. Click on the register link on the right of the homepage to create an account.

Basically the site's divided into two sections; a news site (the homepage) and a forum. The two apps I'm using aren't as integrated as I'd like.. but they are free!

Anyway, I'd better get adding content! ;-)

...on an aluminium G4 15in PB running 10.3.9 on 1.5Gb RAM.

Reported on my Round Britain trip for five months on a G3 PB back in 1999; cannot bring myself to part with it even though the letters nearly off the keys. Seems horribly slow now -- seemed really fast then! I had a PC too - did some chart plotting on it but the rest happened on the Mac. Setting up a GSM phone for remote working was a real art in those days

Have an XP laptop these days for PC web testing and Access work; also run Garmin Bluechart stuff on it but otherwise most of the time on a Mac.

Have loaded MacGPS Pro 5.5.0 - not had much chance to play with it. Lack of European charts a bit of an issue.

Not looked at GPSNavX - must take a gander.

Impressed you're a Mac user, Kim!

I have to say, I'm a big fan of GPSNavX. The application itself works very well. However what's particularly impressive is the speed and committment of the developers. They're constantly adding new functionality and support for different technologies such as weather forecasting with GRIB files, and of course AIS. More recently they've added support for BSB 5.0 charts (although I don't think they're out in the UK yet.)

That's not to say that the product's perfect. It's certainly lacking in many areas compared to a lot of the established PC nav software; vector chart support (they're working on S57), and a touch-screen UI spring to mind, but for $49 it's an absolute bargain!

My son ran an LC (if you can remember that far back) when he was a deck mechanic on oil rig safety boats. A month on in horrendous seas with very dodgy power supplies. When all electronics on the boat were sputtering on generator problems, the mac continued without a blink.

The only marinisation he used was a piece of shock cord to stop it leaping off the desk when crashing into troughs.

This was posted on a G3 using 8.6 but I also use SEs in the company and 5320 Performas. They never die do they?

About 10 years ago, I was running a classic (already old then!) as a mail server - never switched it off for 2 years! No probs! Now on a G3 but still have an old LC in the loft - still works fine. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
