Any recommenations for effective paint stripper?

Our 1967 grp motorboat has got about ten coats of accumulated deck paint, that is flaking off in many places, but adhering strongly in many others.

I'd like to get it all off, and have tried fairly fierce sandpaper, in a Bosch circular sander: but it will take several days with this approach.

I'm wondering if anyone knows of an effective paint stripper that might work through the layers to speed things along?

You can still buy Starchem Synstrip methylene chloride stripper even though it is apparently banned. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Starchem-Synstryp-Paint-Stripper-Litres/dp/B00A7RMPGS I had just the same problem and bought 5 litres that did the job. It is nasty stuff and should only be used outdoors with full protection. Also, it softens grp, so take scraping easy.

No idea, unfortunately ... probably a real cocktail of deck paints, added by a number of different owners over the last 50 years.

Thanks .... presumably the grp will harden ok once the nasty stuff is removed?

Yes, but in my case the deck was textured, so my scraper did some damage. Seems to be hard again now.

Apart from a dichloromethane based stripper probably as good as you will get. It is caustic soda based so care with use need esp eye protection.

Polyurethane paints though are resistant to caustic soda strippers. Maybe also to dichloromethane ... not sure.
