Any reason not to anchor in St Mary's Bay

Re: Any reason not to anchor in St Mary\'s Bay

Thing is - a starlight will gets its wing stuck and then there is no way out

No about 2 miles west of Berry Head, near Brixham Devon.

Ah so, there are a few!

Re: Any reason not to anchor in St Mary\'s Bay

Any way - a nice easterly - warm weekend - BBQ on the beach - we will come (and I will bring my shovel ) should be a nice spot

Re: Any reason not to anchor in St Mary\'s Bay

You in the water yet??
we are out in Gosport BY - lots of polishing - we might even keep up with you

Re: Any reason not to anchor in St Mary\'s Bay

Nearly did a double take - thought you were referring to the Romney Marsh St. Mary's Bay - not much shelter there!

Re: Any reason not to anchor in St Mary\'s Bay

Not really given suitable weather, but holding poor in places (shale?) with two inshore passages inside Mewstones to spice up the trip whether from Brixham or Dartmouth. Consider also Man Sands, Long Sands, Scabbacobe Sands, Pudcombe Cove and Old Mill Bay in that stretch between Torbay and the Dart.

Thanks Malaprop, just looking for somewhere to stop-over on the way to the Silliy's from Weymouth. Thought St Mary's Bay would be a good spot with the kids.

the Silliy's

[/ QUOTE ] Please learn before you get there that they are not The Silliy's or The Scillys.
They are The Isles of Scilly

FWIW the only time I got there it was supposed to be a non-stop trip from Portsmouth to Cork! In the event it was Portsmouth, Dartmouth Falmouth and the Isles of Scilly, then back via several of the smaller places.

The previous trip only got as far as Falmouth and Helford

They are very pleasant though in good weather. I hope you get there and enjoy.

Re: Any reason not to anchor in St Mary\'s Bay

I could be completely wrong but I thought that I'd heard somewhere that certain restrictions apply in that area due to nesting birds. But not sure on who you'd check with.

I'd personally go for Scabbacombe or the little bay just the other side of Hopes Nose, Ansteys Cove. Both provide excellent shelter from the West but forget about if there's any hint of easterly.

OK but beware chavs in fagboats and jetski looneys. Can make a summer evening very tedious. Quick paddle and a taxi ride to Torquay fleshpots for fun evening, though.

Re: Any reason not to anchor in St Mary\'s Bay

As others have suggested, Scabbacombe is better, although often used as a nudist beach, so maybe not ideal for kids!

A good and interesting spot on the passage you are planning is at the western end of Start Bay off the remaining houses of the village of Hallsands, or just to the S. Well sheltered from the West, and ideal if you want to catch the slack off Start, especially if going for the inner passage and the lift from the ebb for the next six hours. Next stop Cawsand!

[/ QUOTE ] ??? My experience of kids is that they are more tolerant of such quirks than other adults. As a kid once myself, I remember being surprised by a bunch of nudists sunbathing around a pool in the Magaliesberg mountains http://www.magaliesberg.co.za/mountain.html , and assuming that was what other folks did.
