The thought of self adhesive side lining carpet as advertised by the likes of Hawke House is appealing. No fumes etc.

However, anything I have ever used that has been prefixed by the words "self" and "adhesive" has always been a let down.

Any one ever used the stuff?

Drove me mad, it just doesn't stay stuck because of the changes in temperature and the inevitable damp on a boat. Used double sided carpet tape, much better than self adhesive or glue from a tube. the only thing I have ever found to be as good (though not as easy to apply) is something called "Sticks like Sh*t" (they use the * as well!). It's trade only but we got some from work and it copes quiet happily with damp and flexible surfaces.

I have used it many times on current and previous boats.

The tip is take the time in measuring in measuring and cut with large sharp scissors. Whatever you do, do not take the backing paper off until you are satisfied with the fit. Stick the carpet down bit by bit gently and slowly pulling the backing paper off from underneah as you progress. A bit like you would stick draught sealer etc.
Before you place carpet on the surface you may want to consider putting insulation foam down first. I obtained this from Hawke House also and it gives the carpet on the hull sides a nicer feel.

Jim,

The foam was sold in rolls and and I was supplied with a spray glue from Hawke house. I had to use a face mask with filters as the spray glue smell fills the air quite badly.
I received a lot of help from Hawke House. I can't remembet the guys name but their very helpful. If I remeber rightly he supplied me with a fools guide drawing for doing this work.
How much foam would you want as I have still got some in the garage and I still have the full face mask which you could have for the postage?

try www.hawkehouse.com

It's not as hard as you think.

Regards.

Peter.

This is all usefull info. I guess it's worth the effort to give a good job.

As yet I couldn't tell you how much of the materials I'll need.

I need to lay out the old stuff and measure.

I was in touch with Hawke house yesterday, as you say they are helpful people.

If it's OK with you I'll PM you in a couple of days.

Regards

I did my boat with it this time last year. It works a treat. It only comes in two colours though - a light bluey grey and a sort of fawn colour.

I took down my old linings down first and used them as a template for cutting out the new stuff with scissors at home. I cut oversize by about an inch all round and then trimmed it when up with a vicious wheel craft knife I got from Hawke House.

The trick to getting it to stay up is to make sure the hull sides are clean and dry. When putting it up heat the hulls sides and the lining carpet with a fan heater and/or hair dryer first and then, once it is in place, press it down firmly with a wallpaper seam roller.

I have had no problems with it showing any signs of coming down.

I've got a few odd bits left, PM if you'd like a sample to try in a hidden corner - this is something I did to practice/perfect my technique.

lined the whole boat with the stuff, no problems and it's still firmly stuck after 5 years. a couple of corners have started to peel where it's used on the overhead panel of bunk foot tunnel but a few dabs of evostik fixed it.

before that i tried using non-glued carpet and separate adhesive. the adhesive soaked through and it had to be scrapped.
