Anyone heard any news about the Azores and Back Race which started on Saturday?

Exciting start with two boats hitting Black rock - the outer limit mark of the starting line - one having to retire. Then another boat tangling with the first mark where she stayed for half an hour. Then two boats having a coming together at the second mark, lone sailing on without nav lights on the bow.

Chastened fleet then set off into the Atlantic in moderate sou-westerlies which strengthened over night.

There were no details of positions on the RCYC as of yesterday midday but there may be now (it's my next port of call).

Read YM August for details of the start and stories of some of the entries

Re: Any News - PS

Original url was wrong.Sorry. Edited one should work and takes you directly to the news page.

Latest position (not on the site): Retirements up to eight since the start plus two non-starters. Race officials hampered by the retirement of Tamar Swallow which was co-ordinating the race radio net (very appropriately named Radio Tiggywinkle - if you have ever met Sue thatcher). Retirements not on the site at the moment include Quaker Girl (Nich 32) and Rivalee (Rival 34). Retirements all due to minor, cumulative technical problems associated with gales on Sunday and Monday nights. Conditions now improving and speeds increasing.

Re: Why on earth..

do they limit the length to over 29' LOA? that rules out Twisters, CO26s, Halcyons, thats a bit daft isn't it? All of the above have survived stuff some 40 footers would fall down in.. and have crossed oceans..
