Hello folks,

a mate of mine has just bought a new boat, well 26yrs old actually, and the engine is playing up a bit. Thing is he can't find a supplier of parts for it so I told him I would ask on here.

Thanks for any help, Andy

Hi
We had a Petter AB1W once. Frankly it was more or less continuous trouble even when fairly new. It had the fiendish ability to know how to fail at the most critical moments. It was not really a marine engine, made for pumps/generators etc. For example the sump is far to shallow to allow for any heel. I think your friend would be better off in the long term by looking for a replacement. That's where we ended up. Just depends how deep his pockets are.

Wouldn't here a word said against them, they make excellent mooring blocks!

Try Marine Engineering Services at Uxbridge - they'll mail order any available service parts.

Biggest problem with them is the aluminium heads on cast barrels. You need to regularly check / change the anodes. If it still has the old 'ring' type anodes, upgrade (with conversion kit) to 'pencil' type.

New heads may be still available, but they're £600 - £700 each. If the heads are just corroded, they can be welded by any competent aluminium welder and then skimmed. If the heads do need removing, take the opportunity to overhaul them - the valve springs are very cheap and easy to replace - you don't even need a valve spring compressor; a 25mm ring spanner, a hammer and a pair of radio pliers are all that's required! Good luck with it.

By the way, they do have some redeeming features, simplicity being one of them, but eventually your mate will have to bite the bullet and get a new engine.
