Has anyone sailed to Chios recently? We are currently in Fournoi and about to sail north to Chios. Can we go into Chios town harbour? What is the marina like? Anywhere else you would recommend? Thanks!

Quote from jimbsail.info :

Khios is busy place, the town full of life. With 30,000 population, it supports a small university and a really lively market area. The effect of tourism is minimal, so prices are reasonable compared to neighbouring islands. Add to that several surrounding islets, plenty of anchorages for a day sails and this is a good spot to visit. There is an unmanaged marina just north of town, with a quite scary entrance guarded by a rocky reef.

Nisos Oinoussa, a group of tiny islands off the N corner of Khios, have some anchorages and the very well sheltered harbour at Mandraki, a quirky place. Moor end on to the quaysides.

That rocky reef is very close to the "marina" entrance, and unmarked when I was last there!

We stayed here a couple of times last year http://www.alanjoanhere.com/CNotes website/Greece_Chios.html . On each occasion we found room alongside the main entrance mole. It was blowing like s**t but protection from the meltemi is excellent once you are in there. Bit tatty but no problems from anyone. Further to walk into town too but it is very well sheltered. Beware though - it is very shallow around you as you enter in about 3m. Keep close to the end of the mole and turn sharply to starboard as you enter.

Would second Oinoussa too. At this time of year you should get on the 'boat club' jetty but in high season the 'rich people' come back and it is full of big motor boats. It is really beautiful though.

Thanks everyone. We are safely moored stern-to on the quay. Virtually no wind yesterday. Off to explore the town this morning, then this afternoon we sail for Ouinoussa, then on to Lesvos later in the week.

The owner of the Taverna on Oinoussia told us that "princess Di and Dodi used to visit there occasionally" whether this is true or not I don't know.
Apparently the richest shipowner in Greece ,one Mr lemnos was born there and is a huge benefactor to the island.

When we were there about four years ago it became obvious that the superyachts were being used as hotels. Many guests, of all nationalities, trooped on and off every day but the boats never moved.

We were there about three weeks ago, only two yachts there. We berthed alongside in strong southerlies, making the usual visitor berths just about untenable. Good bakery up by the cathedral.
