From the nordhavn site on a brokerage boat.......

I know these things are self sufficient in all respects cus of the waters they cruise trans atlantic et al but crickey me is this must be serious money considering it probably adds up to 20% of the value of the entire boat (about £1m) although some of it is just entertainment stuff.

Whats the minimum of clobber you need to do trans atlantic?

Ye gods, times they are a changing! For sure.

I sailed across the Atlantic 20 years ago on a CSY 44, and we thought we were living in the lap of navigational and sybaritic luxury because we had a Magnavox Satnav, a colour (!) TV complete with a video machine, and 400 gallons (heaven!) of water in the tanks for 3 crew.

I crossed the pond again 8 years later on a lovely old S & S yawl - this time we still had a Satnav, but no computers, DVD's or even TV, and 120 gallons of water for 4 crew - and we still had a safe and most enjoyable passage!
And we only used about 100 gallons of water in total, for the 18 day passage.

I guess we were roughing it in comparison to these Nordhavn crew....... oh well, they certainly won't get bored, having to look after all that kit........

PS - I hope that some form of steadying sail was included in that comprehensive inventory, along with a wing engine, just in case summat happens to the dependable Lugger.
(sorry, but I am a dedicated raggie, and have an inherent distrust of all things mechanical or electrical)

Interesting post. Thanks. But you say: "... crossed the pond again 8 years later on a lovely old S & S yawl..." Now that's interesting! I was just wondering which vessel? By chance, Dorade, Stormy Weather, Sonny, Zeearend, Baruna, Chubasco, Cometa, Bolero, Circe, Capricia, Giralda...?

Oooooh, another S & S aficionado! They are all just drop dead gorgeous aren't they? I get wobbly knees when confronted by any classic S & S design really.

Re which one, I had the honour and priviledge of sailing on Stormy Weather (who was 75 this year incidentally) - we had a fantastic run across to Antigua from Tenerife, with a few 200 mile days, kite and mizzen staysail up during the day, and twin headsails, main and mizzen at night, always sailing on about 140 apparent, and boy were we truckin'.

Paul sold Stormy a few years later - he had bought her in poor condition in the early '80's in Tortola, re framed and redecked her, and then proceeded to do 40 transatlantics in her over the next 20 years....... sailing on her is simply magic.

To all those keen MOBO'ers reading this, forget the million dollar Nordhavns mentioned above with all their gizmos - just go and commission a brand new Stormy (strip plank epoxy?) instead, and see how much fun you will have! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Stormy Weather!? I can’t believe it! I just don’t know what to say! Thanks for your reply …you lucky person. Your post made my day!

I can now only read – and try and mentally digest as much as possible – and respect the details, and successes of Olin Stephens’ magical designs; and Olin and Rod’s contributions to changing the face of sailing… as I’m only a bystander and amateur (but a total enthusiast!). (And of other fine designs too, of course). Most interesting. Oh, and Nordhavns are lovely aswell.

Re Stormy Weather (the boat!)

I was very fortunate indeed to have been able to regularly sail on Stormy for a few years - I did a few Bequia Easter regattas on her in the early '90's, along with the Fastnet in '93, Glandore Classics in '94 and Antigua Classics in '95.

Re our transatlantic passage in '94, we set off from Douarnenez in Brittany on 1st November - not the best time of year to be crossing Biscay - got bashed by a couple of gales, used storm jib and trysail, were nearly run down in broad daylight by a Chinese bulk carrier while hove to in the second gale 30 miles outside the shipping lanes off Cape Finistere (I am not exaggerating when I say that her bow wave helped to push us clear), and had a vicious squall off Lisbon that had the wind speed indicator pegged at 64 knots, during which we lost all the mainsail track off the timber mast......
But we got to Porto Santo OK after 10 days at sea, effected repairs to the mainsail track, proceeded on to Santa Cruz in Tenerife to provision, and then stormed (well almost) our way across to Antigua.

Olin Stephens designed Stormy when he was 23 years old, and he cheerfully admits that she is one of his favourite designs.
He is going to be 99 years old in April next year, and I understand that he is still bright as a button and very much in demand at S & S functions.

Olin was the guest of honour on board Stormy a few years ago for her first major Classics regatta in the Med after the million dollar re-fit by her new owner at a famous Italian yard.
There was an extensive write up about her in Classic Boat a few months later - including a lovely account of how boats like Stormy should (not) be sailed........ seems like the Owner had shipped on board a rock star crew, all professional sailors in their own right, in keen anticipation of following on with Stormy's formidable reputation for mopping up everything in sight (upwind and down, on both corrected and elapsed time). Everything was going well on the first downwind leg and they were stonking along with everything up - Olin helmed for a bit, and doing so must have really brought back a flood of memories.
As they rounded up after reaching the leeward mark, the rock star grinders all jumped into action and had the genoa and main sheets snugged in tight with lightning speed - whereupon the boat stopped dead in the water........ imagine the consternation and the accusations that were flying about re the helm's sailing abilities...... I think that Olin was quietly sitting on the tiny aft deck, watching all this, and waiting for the crew to 'suss out' what they were doing wrong.
But they didn't, so eventually Olin politely suggests that they give the mainsheet a substantial ease (it was in bar tight) and see what happens. They did so - and immediately took off...... with the rock stars looking totally bemused...... Stormy sails in cheerful defiance of modern sailing theory, and when sailing to windward most of the mainsail is back winded by the genoa such that she is sailing basically on the leech. Sheet in any more and she just stops.

She is an absolute dream to sail - tiller steered, controlling 22 tonnes of thoroughbred, yet once she is in her groove (and this happens on all points of sail - trim is vital) she just romps along with one hand on the tiller, perfectly balanced.

I used to disconnect the Monitor wind vane on my watches alone on deck on the transatlantic passage, and helm for the sheer enjoyment of it - the best I managed was 14 knots on the log surfing down a wave with the kite and mizzen staysail up.

PS - Although I am a die hard raggie, I must admit to having a very soft spot for Nordhavns - they are just gorgeous really.

And Contessa26, you have a true classic as well (I am assuming you have a Contessa?) - I reckon they are up there in the hall of fame with Stormy, for sure.

I must admit to being rather baffled as to why punters throw truckloads of cash at large stereotyped AWBs (power and sail) - apparently they were all selling like hot cakes at Southampton Boat Show.
I think that if I had a million or so US$$'s to spare on a yacht, I would immediately commission a new strip-planked or cold-moulded Stormy. And I wouldnt change anything, apart from the construction and sailcloth material. She has got to be the nearest I have ever come to perfection in a sailing yacht.

When is comes to proper looking vessels - you’ll be glad to hear that you’re preaching to the converted! And we’ll probably get attacked for discussing this on the motor forum, which in itself would be fun. But I entirely agree with you. I like a boat to look proper.
How interesting to hear of your sentiments regarding sailing aboard perhaps one of the most finest and most historical boats out there…
I’ve messed about in boats all my life: 8 Metres, IOD’s and Folkboats, or oyster boats & old 1890’s Pilot Cutters; but never a 1930’s ocean racer. My type of boating is really tame compared to yours, but I love any boat, including your Challenger 35. Yes, and we love our wee Contessa... and a Nordhavn 57. Interesting to hear of your Dream Ship: a new commission Stormy. Ours? Err...

Ummm yes, I must admit I was getting a bit worried about being told off for preaching raggie talk on a mobo forum.... I guess we should perhaps move this to eg the classic boat forum - but there again, nobody else has bothered to respond to the initial post here describing the very comprehensive list of equipment on the Nordhavn, so maybe folk are not too worried....

Have you really got a Contessa 26 AND a Nordhavn? I thought I had wellies in both raggie and mobo camps, but you put me to shame most definitely there. Very fine choice of vessels, they are both pretty, and pretty much the epitomy of their type.

Please do tell what the Nordhavn Contessa's dream ship is........

PS - there is a nice article about the S & S yawl 'Tomahawk' in the November issue of Classic Boat magazine - I got mine in the post a couple of days ago, and am rationing it.....
Some might say that these S & S yawls are all very similar / just variations of a theme - but when that basic theme is near as dammit perfect, why change?

No sorry, my last post was ambiguous. As always. Unfortunately no – not a Nordhavn owner; just love ‘em. I wish. Contessa is all we can – just – manage! But as mentioned, I love all boats.

And yes – we’ll get flamed for going on - and on - about Olin Stephens boats on the wrong forum! But just to conclude, and finish up: ‘Tomahawk’? Oooh.. superb… and yes, how do you improve on near perfect!

You ask: My Dream Ship? We’d need to start a new thread on that one too. And I’d need more notice…
