My gearbox requires ATF fuild to dexron III spec - its a Hurth HSW 630 A1-2

Our Parts Dept have been having a sort out and have just asked if I could use 30lts of Shell Donax TA (ATF fluid) for my boat... (a lifetime supply!)

Just looked up Donax TA specs;

Typical Physical Characteristics
Donax TA (D-21631)
Kinematic Viscosity ISO 3104
at 40°C mm2/s 34.9
at 100°C mm2/s 7.2
Viscosity Index ISO 2909 141
Density at 15°C kg/m3 ISO 12185 871
Flash Point COC °C ISO 2592 180
Pour Point °C ISO 3016 -45

and Donax TX (dexron III spec);

Typical Physical Characteristics
Donax TX (G-34077)
Kinematic Viscosity ISO 3104
at 40°C mm2/s 33.7
at 100°C mm2/s 7.3
Viscosity Index ISO 2909 185
Density at 15°C kg/m3 ISO 12185 845
Flash Point COC °C ISO 2592 185
Pour Point °C ISO 3016 -48

look fairly similar to the un-trained eye. Anyone see any issues if I put Donax TA in my gearbox instead of Donax TX...

..as my gearbox does still leak a bit I do often need to top it up so it is something I get through.

Since ATf is quite inexpensive and that used additives are 'a factory secret', I'd stay with the recommended.

You are making a big mistake putting the wrong oil in your gear box. If Hurth recommend Dextron III use it, dont put Dextron II in or any multipurpose ATF fluid. When you get to the Alderney Race and your gearbox packs up you aint' going to be able to row your way out of danger and you will regret the pennies saves. Take up painting it is cheaper.....

Not sure if you are aware that your gearbox is a ZF

ZF recommend TA oil

ZF TE-ML 03d -04d- 09 -11A

Do any of the above codes relate to your manual ?

you quote your model of gear box as a 630 which is fairly old (hurth), the exact same gear box is now model 63 ( ZF dropped the 0).

Perhaps the new manual for the 63 does include the above ZF spec ???

Hi Daka, I knew it was a ZF/Hurth gearbox, I took the model number from the serial no plate on the top, which stated 630... but from memory the manual refers to a 63... boat was launch 2001, so gearbox may be anything from 1998-2000? just depends how long its been kicking around before finding a home in my Hardy. From memory don't you have the same gearbox? & if so what do you use?

Manual on the boat so I can't check on codes you referred to..

Mine is the 63 A exactly the same as yours but slightly different ratio 2.5 :1

My manual is 2004 and I use dexon III, I cant remember if another spec is also recommended or not.

An old 630 manual may well specify the above ZF approval ?

Im on my boat now and I think the manual is at home.

Donax TX is now called Spirax S4 ATF HDX and is backwards compatible, it is a synthetic lubricant instead of a mineral.

According to my literature it is suitable for your application.

indeed I know TX is compatible, what I have sitting at work is a 30ltr barrel of Donax TA which we used to use in old Borg Warner units, its not synthetic and TBH I have already told the guys thats its not for me, I will use dexron III spec ATF as all manuals suggest. thanks all for your input. :)
