I've got my getting very old 'old man' coming down for a visit next week and I'm to take him out fishing. Now in the Western Solent, could anyone offer any suitable places to take him. Happy to anchor if bottom is suitable, but given forecasts of late it would have to be in the Solent. I know loads of places in the Eastern Solent where there aren't any fish, just need to discover some in the West!

And I know laods of places off East Sussex where there aren't any fish, and few where there are too /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif With the boat move next week I could do with knowing where in the Eastern Solent there aren't any fish so I can give those places a miss and find my own places with no fish. Is the Mixon Hole now devoid of life too?

Many thanks, we are heading out Friday afternoon (6th July) and possible Saturday. If it's fairly flat I'm quite happy go 25 miles. Definetly looking for the table, but saying that anythiing so the old man can at least say he caught something. Saturday could be with wife and mother, so distance would have to be less.

I tried the Mixon Hole only once last year and got sod all. That could have more to do with my fishing ability than fish in there though.

We've mostly been lucky fishing just off fort victoria, a mile or so past Yarmouth. Often see lots of boats drifting with the tide fishing so assume a popular place for it. Also been lucky at no mans land and horse sand forts.

Went on a fishing trip out of Poole a few weeks back, don't know what the area is called but it was roughly a mile south east of Bournemouth pier, sorry can't be more precise...quite a few fishing boats floating around there so must be a reasonably well known area. We caught Pollack, Mackerel and dogfish.

from there through to Christchurch Ladge is generally called Southborne Rough and fishes pretty well for bream, wrasse, pollack and mackerel.

Same in the area of banks and pinacles on the entry to the Western Solent - bass will also be found on both areas when the tide's running well.

further into the solent, on the banks to the edges, you will find smoothhounds at the moments - whole calamari squid fished on the bottom doing well at the moment. fish light and these will give a great fight; but put them back after the fun.

small bream all around the area at the moment - very small but agai fun - tiny strips of squid.

mackerel to feathers on flooding tide off ledges, headlands and points..........

looking at the weather for the weekend pack plenty of waterproofs, stay in the solent, stay in the pub at Yarmouth!

the mullett at Northney are partial to white bread - a lad there used to catch a few til marina got sniffy abt OOh! fishing in the Marina.

Heard you can surprise em with a boathook or such just in front of them, then quickly net too. and certainly they can be crept up on & tickled.

Thanks Duncan, Friday (6th July) afternoon from about 2pm and possibly Saturday afternoon as well. If the forecast was that good I'd go 40 miles max, but judging buy my catch rate, I'm not the best fisherman in the world!

no need to go more than 8 miles past the Needles unless you specifically want cod.

plenty of conger to 40lb and rays to 30lb from marks in that area if you want a good tussle /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
