So, we are determined to do this circuit, and even cracks in our hull won't stop us!

Seeing as we're recently certified (or iable?) open water divers, we'd like to get some more dives under our belts. Are there any decent dive sites around the Peleponnese? We're new divers, so our standards aren't particularly high, but we'd still like recommendations.

SWMBO likes fish. I just like seeing pretty things.

Think of an area of water with a jellyfish ev. five feet in all dimensions and you have the Pelleponisos at this time of year. Take your wetsuits!

Sharm sounds a much better bet to me!

Jellyfish? Oh dear. That could put the Mrs right off. We had to contend with swathes of jellyfish all last season and we didn't enjoy it. We'd been really pleased we hadn't seen any so far this season!

We have seen quite a few dive boats this year in the Aegean but so far not a single jellyfish. The water in the Saronic tends to be nowhere near as clear as other regions in my snorkelling experience but the Cyclades is crystal clear.

No jellyfish seen around Peloponisos (and I am speargun fishing a lot- so I see what is happening below the water)

+1 , very clear if it hasn't rained recently (and it doesn't from June to September)

Do not carry SCUBA gear on your boat together with spear gun fishing kit. SCUBA with spear gun is illegal in Greece, and with both aboard, you'll be assumed to be a law breaker.

Some deep old wrecks in Navarino Bay (Battle of Navarino) . Nikos in the dive shop above Pylos marina speaks fluent American and knows all the dive sites from Navarino bay, past Methoni and Finikounda to Koroni, and all the offshore islands.

well I have both.
scuba gear is just in case if the anchor is stucked.
but I guess nobody will dig into my boat...

PP stopped me once while I was speargun fishing but I have the permit, so no problem.

As far as I know, solo (without diving center) diving is also illegal.

If recently qualified open water divers, you should really go on supervised dives for quite some time. Partly because the supervisors know where to go to see the best stuff, partly because you will learn more with a supervising instructor, but mostly because if you get into trouble, there is someone experienced around to help you out.

This is what we're expecting to do.

I thought it was only illegal without a licence - are you saying that with or without a licence scuba and spear fishing is not allowed in Greece?

Right up to the Rhion Bridge from the entrance to the gulf and down to Katakolon and Kiparissia there are many of them, as previously described. However, if that is NOT the Peleponisos to you! For Methoni eastwards I cannot comment.

Steve's certainly right about the jellyfish in Katakolou. We set off from there at dawn yesterday and the boat was surrounded by the blighters. The big, stumpy ones. Quite pretty in clear water, actually.

Down in Pylos yesterday/this morning and couldn't see any. None here in Finikouda, either. Spoke to the dive chap in Pylos and asked him about jellyfish. Apparently they don't turn up in that neck of the woods until September.

Just ahead of you Cardo, we left Pylos this morning and are now in Methoni. There's a local rumour here about a fishing boat that was sunk nearby in 1943 transporting away a ton of Nazi gold. Divers have been looking for it for years. See here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/881585.stm.

Must be worth a shot :)

I think you're a bit behind us! We arrived in Kalamata Marina yesterday and were lifted out of the oggin this morning. Now trying to decide the best way to move forward. I believe wheels may be a suitable idea!

I thought you guys sailed past us on our way down to Pylos on Saturday? But then we couldn't see you in Pylos harbour, so thought you'd either gone further or we simply got the wrong boat!
