Hello everyone, I have just returned from my holidays to find a little flashing flag at the top of my screen. When I clicked on it I found that some kind soul had sent me a message to advise me of this forum. Thank you very much, and may I please join the forum with a question about the River Nene.
I am currently a member of the Peterborough Yacht Club, which is based on the River Nene, but as I am now the owner of a sailing boat I would like to make full use of her.
So on to the question. I know that there are bridges in Wisbech that I will need to get under before I can rig the mast, but does anyone know of any more bridges between Wisbech and the open waters of The Wash ?.
Whilst I am at it, does anybody know of moorings and marinas along the North and East Norfolk coastline ?.
I would like to keep my boat reasonably close but also benefit from the sailing grounds further South, without incurring the excessive costs.
Many thanks in advance

Hi Pat
Been out to a party so a little worse for wear
Glad you found your PM
Sent another one , gimme a ring and we'll have a chat
Cheers fer now
Dave

Dave,
for the benefit of posterity and the wider education of the Forum, why dont you just answer the question?
Are there any known architectural impediments to progress, or not?

Are you in the running for the GnuLabur leadership, as failing to answer a straight question is a prime requirement!!??

From memory (30 years since I went up the Nene) the is one bridge at Sutton Bridge.

It used to be an opening bridge and would assume that it still is as ships still go the Wisbech.
How you get it lifted I don't know.
The new marina at Wisbech should be able to help you with this.
This is looked after by Fenland District Council Tel: +44(0)1354 654321

Yes there is one. Sutton Bridge lies in the way, as mentioned by someone already. This is a swing bridge that carries traffic on a busy road, the A17. It is permanently manned, but can only be opened when there are two bridge-keepers in attendance, so they need prior warning and prefer 24 hrs notice. Contact either by VHF or phone. They will also try and restrict openings by grouping river traffic, so you might find yourself having to wait around a little. Not a big problem, but the current is pretty strong. There is a waiting pontoon on the seaward side of the bridge.

Once in the Wash, there are no marinas going clockwise around the coast until you get to Lowestoft. There is a pontoon next to the harbour office, with shower block, at Wells. You can often pick up a spare mooring, or else just anchor, either at Wells, Brancaster or Blakeney. All are lovely havens but restricted in access by the tide.

Jim , at the time of making that post I had been enjoying a bottle or three with freinds /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif and felt that any two fingered , one eyed ( aid to focus ) post would probably have made little sense /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I always mix up Sutton Bridge with Fosdyke so thought I had best check a few things too /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif , and had an early start to get to Peterborough Yacht Club this morning also to contend with /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Pat , very nice to meet you , the others seem to have everything else covered regarding the bridge except for This PDF Document which I promised you
As discussed , and already stated , you will need to contact the bridge in advance and the contact details are on that download along with other goodies .
As advised , the trip from The Dog in Doublet through to Wisbech does actually contain a lot more bridges than you thought so best to motor all the way through to Wisbech Marina or your mast will be up and down like a proverbial set of underwear .
Once in Wisbech Marina you can rig the mast before moving off but best to contact the bridge first to save hanging about in fast flowing water . Last time I did it was in the mobo so I didn't have a mast to contend with /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Happy sailing buddy , hope someone else can provide more info about marinas or suitable moorings , I have yet to find out so look forward to seeing what others say
