Hi all,

Currently stranded in Boston and like many, looking for alternate methods of transport home.. Any cargo, passenger ships etc leaving New york or surrounding areas in next few days?

Virgin saying no seats now until 30th April at best!..

10 days!!.. can cruise in 6!.

Suggestions welcome!

Cheers

Nick

Fly to Spain; overland to Santander; ferry home? Best of luck.

According to BBC News 24, Iceland airports are largely unaffected. Suggest you fly there and stare very hard at any Icelanders you come across.

But seriously, BBC has just said that ash cloud is on its way back.

Cargo ships only carry 12 passengers and are not cheap.

Yep, gov't now organising ships from Santander/Bilbao back to Blighty, and Spannish gov't apparently laying on coaches from Madrid to the port, so best thing is to get a flight to Madrid. If you can't do that, then just fly somewhere in Europe and get to a channel port.

And I hate to say it

The 30th is when they (Virgin) start to take bookings again, no guarantee of a seat, if you have missed as in had it cancelled you are on standby with the rest of the nation!

I would head to a larger hub (New York) where your chances may be greater for stand by (five a day vs one to Boston) or get on the boat!

Agree all that. Right now (Tuesday morning 20/4) there are 250 ish planes flying over Western Europe, several from the US. Eg www.radarvirtuel.com. So some people are getting home. But I expect the crowds at airports and the ticket issuing process will still be awful for the next few days

After getting a script error message on IE8, I noticed that the developers of this site must be a bunch of devoted Microsoft supporters...!

We strongly advice all Internet Explorer users to switch to another browser, like Firefox, Chrome, Opera or Safari.
Internet Explorer is not powerful enough to run this website

I think the quickest way back will be to let the dust settle, and then fly...

I am stuck here too - was due to fly back from New York on Monday. I've headed up to Maine, the sun is shining and the sea food is fantastic... They're promising a flight back in five days; so we'll see!

Good luck!

We're delayed in Houston, but it actually worked in our favour as we needed to delay our return by a week so we ended up being able to change without penalties. We now travel next weekend. However I noticed flights are operating out of Houston to LHR with availability now, so if you're stuck on the East Coast, travel West and then home from there! :)

Our guy that picks us up from the airport is currently in Florida though and stuck until 30th too.
