OK . we've gone and done it . As a confirmed for life stinky (bit like being a Tory when you think about it). TB and I are booked on a 'Warm water' Day skipper course on a German sail-boat. Week long and have loadsa fun?

Given that neither of us ,and especially TB. know a luff from a leech what is the best advice you could give us?

P.S. Not going is not an option and yes we have booked the course as just the two of us on the boat with instructor in order to get maximum traction/not hack off anyone else.

Just go and enjoy it ....

I like all boats .... motor and rag ... I own 3 raggies ....

The sound of just water swishing along, the lack of being thrown about crashing through over waves .... but again their is still adrenaline in a raggie if you want it .... sheet in- pull out the stops and let her fly !!

Honestly don't listen to this lot of wet farts ..... get on it, open your minds and enjoy it !!!! You may just find you like it !!!

(Don't forget that in 2007 - you might just want a raggie - when the fuel duty goes on !!!!)

If you are of a practical bent, sail-boat operationlike most things, has a lot to do with common sense. So just relax and enjoy the experience so you can congratulate yourselves on becoming multi-format boaters.

Honestly told... not exactly 'experienced' as stinkies. Just seem to have collected 'qualifications' without recent boat ownership, more a case of scounging occasional rides and even less occasional charter. Confess to really looking forward to it as I love the sea and what it does for me , and love boats even more. TB was driving force on this one... also going to bareboat in BVI in Winter if this works out....

Promise never to get into 'Twisters' though !!

Re: Sailing

is more about the journey than getting from A to B . Another difference is that you actually are part of the machine that makes it all go.

There is a bit of physical effort required though this can often be reduced by timing and looking around. Often a crewmember is straining away pulling on something that is already as tight as it will go or has an opposite force imposed from a line that should have been let go before the pulling commenced.

There are more things to bump you on the head, trip you up or trap your fingers all helped along by varying degrees of heel, so just take your time.

If, having learnt the basics, you don't love the moment when the engine goes off I'll be very surprised.

Re: Rudeness

Is it an instructor thing? Or have you just rented a boat with a skipper? Either way i bet it wil be fab. But it is largely in the hands of the skippie.

First, telim it is a holiday, so you want to see the nice bits if poss, and no nasty waves or not too much thankyou very much.

second, tellim that yoiu'll have the rear cabins if at anchor BUT might change your mind later, and he'll have to move.

Third, tellim to bog off from time to time so you can laze about on "your" boat.

Fourth, don't get railroaded into some deal where you have to listen to his boring sailing stories every mealtime. "we need some time on our own" is a key phrase, sometimes.

Fifth, you are a backsliding git, having wasted loads of time in another place about motorboats, then first main hol is on a ragboat.

C\'est un attaque de TCM!

Can not resist the craic can you!!

points 1-4 are well taken, Going out of La Gomera so points 1 and 2 have been stressed, yes it is a real RYA course.
!point three - agreed we get 3 evenings and one day to ourselves...sounds good ??

Point 4 - as regards to sea-salt stories, ~ I love them . !! Not sure about TB but hell I'll take the risk.'

Point 5 - ' have spent time in another place and not ...first major holiday' For other readers . TB and I have been fortunate enough to have been suffered on TCM's boat ( aka palace).

SORRY TCM - we have stern-berthed over a a 2 -day peiod in St Trop having 'done' Club 55 in a Leopard!! FOAD !!! Which was the major holiday ???????? TB and I will never forget. Even more so her ...Thanks . TB now correctly believes that all boats are that swanky/de rigeur/normal. How the hell do I fulfill her dreams of opulence ? YOUR FAULT.

Point 6 - not mentioned - I just love boats and she is getting there. Fair? Remain comitted stinky with open mind to having fun....

Apologies written after another bottle of Rose...so YES I am a backsliding/over-gratuitous/spawny git

Firstly, is Tony Blair looking for a new career as a sailor?

Secondly, one of the most important things that I learnt from my instructor was that "sailing should be elegant, nothing done in a rush".

There you go!

Arggh. Sorry , my TB is aka 'The Boss' , something Tony Blair can only aspire to given his lack of control . My missus would sort them all out in no time.

That's the object of the exercise to have fun and enjoy it, orders have been given , we'll see. If only those winch things were electric... oh well.

Enjoy Your Course and I will See You

Enjoy your course and I will see you in La Gomera.

Reading between the lines...and guessing...

You will probably be the first clients for this new sailing school but your instructor will be Doug Carroll who is very experienced and has worked for us a couple of times.

Beware that with just the two of you of the boat... One on the wheel, one on the winches and the instructor just instructing it may be harder work than you expected. SWMBO might wish she had a fully crewed boat !

See you in the "Blue Marlin" on Sunday night.

Sorry we didn´t have space for you.

Be interested to see how you get on, as I am planning to do something similar, hopefully in the not too distant future.
