I have a Yanmar 1GM8 with gearbox in a Kestrel 22.
The engine is getting smokey and the gearbox is worn - the gear change has become very sloppy and hardly moves the boat !
I am fairly new to (boat) maintenance but fancy stripping the assembly myself - is there an equivalent of a 'Haynes' manual for this engine/gearbox ? In fact is there a 'bible' of all boat maintenance that anyone would recommend ?
Final daft question - Do I need to get the boat out for this job ? assuming, of course I do not need to withdraw the entire prop shaft anyway.

I'd check the gearbox linkage (probably a Morse cable) before doing anything else, to see if it is moving the lever on the box right over to the forward and aft position.

With regard to the engine "smoking", one needs to know the appearance of the smoke -
white smoke usually means water getting into the bore
black smoke means the engine is getting fuel but is overloaded, dirty prop, binding stern gland, overpropped can all contribute to that
blue smoke usually means stuck/broken rings, leaking valve guides or just plain wear.

There are several general books on marine diesel engine maintenance, but none like the Haynes manuals specific to the Yanmar.

Try this one...

There is a manual, very much in the Haynes style, covering the Yanmar GM range.

Its by Chilton Marine, an American Company.

www.chiltonsonline.com

You'll find it in many chandlers in the UK.

Good luck.
