Antifreeze/coolant

I have twin Kamd 300 volvo's which i just serviced.I am now looking to change the antifreeze/coolant

Is there a difference between what volvo sell you or the normal antifreeze you buy in the motor factors.There is a huge difference in price .

Any ideas

I get mine from my nearest volvo truck service centre. much cheaper than paying a volvo marine dealer and its the same stuff volvo part part No 1089238 5 litres of concentrate

find truck dealer here and give them a call. I get my oil from them as well

Some antifreezes from motorists shops are suitable for use in Aluminium engine parts.

according to the manual 50/50 if there is a possibility of freezing, but no less than 40% AF or it loses its anti corrosive properties

50/50 is spot on.

be very careful about using different anti freeze products as a lot of them are incompatable if mixed and may cause "Gelling"leading to damage

There are 2 basic types of antifreeze. We are supposed to use the non bio-damaging sort. Can't remember which is which, but a quick google will tell you.

True, my Yanmar had a warranty claim for a blocked heat exchanger.....

Yup - and even if they don't gel the bits that tend to be incompatible are the anti-corrosion additives, some articles suggest that the incompatibility cancels out the effectiveness.

Suggest flushing system well with water before changing coolant types....

BTW the two main types are Organic Acid Technology (OAT) and the older Ethelyn Glycol based. OATs are used in the newer long life (5 year) coolants, and tend to be red or pink colored. IIRC the VP stuff is a 'conventional' EG coolant, but with a good anti-corrosive additive package...

I think you will find that both OAT and silicate antifreezes are ethylene glycol based.

Worth noting that they are identified by their colour and should not be mixed.

The alternative to ethylene glycol is propylene glycol. Its advantage is than it is non toxic to humans and other animals, unlike ethylene glycol which is very toxic.
Propylene glycol is used as the the base for coolants in refrigeration systems in the food industry but I an not aware of any antifreezes based on it being available in the UK although I believe they are in the USA.
