I am about to re-antifoul my trailer sailor and I as it's my first time at antifouling could you help me?
The old antifoul is just peeling off at the moment so could I use a scrapper to get it all off or do I have to sand it down?
Dinghies were never this complicated!
Thanks alot,
Alasdair

Hi
It depends if you want to take it back to the gel coat, if so you must scrape it. Sanding antifouling is never a good option, if as you say its peeling off your in luck, however get a mask and goggles, and a good scraper. After about three hours you will have to remind yourself that boating is your hobby
good scraping KW

Do you keep your trailor sailor in the water or is it kept out of the water most of the time? If out of the water most of the time it may not be necessary to use antifouling paint.
Is it a GRP boat? If so you will probably be able to scrape/chip off the old antifouling; be carefull to avoid damaging the gell coat. It is usual to use some kind of tack coat between the gell coat and the antifouling. Best to ask antifouling manufacturer's advice or obtain one of their advice handbooks.

I am in the process of doing my trailer motorboat.

The antifouling and primer was peeling off in some places and stuck fast in others.

I have mostly used a Proscraper that fits on a vacuum cleaner and supplemented this with a chisel in places and some stripping compound in some tough areas (mostly where the air and daylight gets at it)

It's a long job but I hope in future years just to be able to paint straight over the top.

pm me if you want more details

I have just bought my Antifoul from the chandlers in Shamrock Quay not only was it dearer than last year but they did not do the tins which had 30% free, so I was a bit mift. The next day I called into Aladdins Cave and most of their tins had the extra 30%, so I was really!!!!!!!

Alasdair, i suspect that if you do a search under the heading, you will find loads of previous discussions on Anti-foul removal, the most efficient way to remove all, (doing it oneself) is to go and buy a Sandvik scraper with a carbon steel blade and only available from a good! tool shop... a 2" one will probably be best..File the corners of the blade to avoid digging in and keep the blade flat to the surface when using.... once you get going you will find it , if not easy, relatively quick..... wear a MASK! and goggles...and sartorial elegance is most definately not the order of the day! Thanks alot for all the responses,
I did do a quick search before hand, alot of results!
I am tempted to not bother and just wash her down after she's been in the water for a long time. She is kept on a trailer and so is only in the water for a few hours at a time unless I'm doing a weekend cruise. It's what I did with my GP14 and it was fine.
Thanks alot for the help and advice.
