ANTIFOULING - SUPPLEMENT (for what it\'s worth)

Sorry had to create a "new post":

Here in Norway our marinas freeze over. Many wanting to boat year round use the following to keep their boat clear of ice ... the effect also appears to hinder growth ...
It's a little pricy at £450 but does the business.

And, in the summer months (temp. of water permitting;-) I often "wash" the hull down with kelp when moored ... and find I do not suffer that "line of slime" one usually gets along the water line and above.

More details...

These de-icers are popular in the US too. For people who don't know about them, they work by using a submerged electrically driven prop to circulate water around the boat. By keeping the water moving, it doesn't freeze. Apparently a 0.5hp unit will keep a 50ft diameter area ice-free, and costs around $420. Here's a little diagram from West Marine's website...

Re: ANTIFOULING - SUPPLEMENT (for what it\'s worth) not much to me ...

... or to anyone in tidal waters.

My beauty is moored on a fore-and-aft trot where the flow reaches 2-3 kn: plenty of water movement, no ice, but lots of growth!

I remember my father telling me about a boat on a swinging mooring in the upper reaches of Poole Harbour that had its bow timbers cut through by floating shards of ice coming down on the tide, one hard winter.
