Just come out of the water today. The bottom is almost totally clean apart from some slime patches. No weed or barnacles of anysort.
Launched March, retrieved 26 October,
Location - Portsmouth
Antifouling - Seajet 033 Shogun. (navy blue)

Never had such a clean bottom, and it doesn't cost as much as others....

My boat too had a lot less growth on it too in the Blackwater in Essex this year and I do not use antifouling at all, just 2 pot polyurethane paint. I just re-spray the bottom once every 5 to 6 years, saves on paint & work.

I do have a scrubbing brush on a long bamboo cane that I scrub the bottom of the boat from the yacht tender using a rollock as a fulcrum for the brush every couple of weeks. This years there's been very little growth to scub off.

It is maybe as a result of the cool wet late spring making the water not saline enough near the surface at the main barnacle spatting time was my explanation, I just don't know.

That's interesting Chris. Same location. Same anti-foul. Same period.

Last year there was minimal fouling / loss of speed and I recommended the anti-fouling. This year the boat is now so slow I don't bother going out for afternoon sails. Probably lost 1.5 knots and it feels really sluggish.

Only difference is that we spent 10 weeks in South Brittany (Morbihan etc) this year. Even tho' the weather was basically poor the water temperature was often 20 plus.

Boat is coming out Monday and I will be very interested to see what has gone on underneath.

My boat is also in the Solent and I used Micron Ultima, I think. If, however, you do have a peoblem the scrub facility just 500m north of Shephards Wharf in Cowes is great and cheap. £150ish for a 50 ft yacht. If you pick a fine day they will scrub it and then leave the boat on the hoist overnight for you to antifoul or touch up. Run by a fantastic Ossie bloke.

My experience also with the same product. I had some very lightly attached weed, as a result of sitting in Fox's Marina for three months with no movement.

I know what you mean but Solent prices must be viewed as a separate universe where different rules apply.

No cost comparisons are valid with entities outside the Solent!

Launched April, out in end of September. Top end of River Crouch on a half tide mooring.

Virtually clean, very little surface slime, even. Boat hardly used due to the grotty weather. However, I wonder if the lack of sunshine on the water inhibited weed growth. Barnacles on the bottom sides ot the keels and skeg and clustered round the engine water intake.

Antifoul; Marclear workboat.

I'm impressed. Pompey is usually the worst with barnacles, bladderwrack and those horrible squashy jelly things!

In Christchurch (Stanpit) I usually get the green fringe round the waterline and barnacles on the flat bottom. This year the green fringe has been bad but the barnacles have been partially displaced by a sort of brown carpet about 1/4 inch thick. Still seems to add 3 or 4 to my handicap (old money) as the season progresses which means I should win a few at the beginning of next season! with the carpet scraped off!

Funny how the ecology seems to change from year to year.

Similar result. Shogun 033 last November, in Chichester marina till March, then Haslar till now. Scrubbed her on the grid at Bucklers Hard this October (£23 - great if you have the time to wait for tide) - just wiped off the slime and replaced anode, then went to the pub to wait for tide to come in. Will definitely use it again.

I own a Swift 18, (Swing Keel), and have been wondering about using that Shogun 033, but am wondering, do you think it's hard enough for a boat taking the ground every tide?

Best, Charlie.

We are in the Hamble - we were accused last weekend of having an indecently clean bottom after comprehensively out tacking a similar size boat. Boat was launched in June - jetwashed lightly at the end of August but was found to be clean except for a light slime and a few critters growing on the untreated saildrive leg. Tiger Extra was used this year - probably again next year.
Any suggestions for the saildrive ? I was thinking of coating it (and the folding prop) with melted lanolin before launching next spring but open to better ideas.

Probably not, I scrub my One Design before each race, about every 2 weeks, and you can see some blue paint coming off with the slime, so regular grounding and the abrasion it gets would remove it all quite fast from that area I would think.
I have found it excellent though, highly recommend

Our previous yacht (now sold) was lifted for survey in mid September and hull was very clean with just a little slime after 6 months in at Sovereign.

2 coats Teamac D (blue) ...very pleased with results, will use again.

Just try Anhydrous Lanolin - slapped on with a blow troch, or heated till liquid or painted on.

....Or don't waste your money! I did this two years back and it was worse than nothing.
