Hi,

I read good reviews here about Velox Plus for antifouling sterngear like props and p-brackets and am in the process of doing mine with that but I wondered what people do about their prop shafts ? When I bought Sunrunner she had normal antifoul on ther p-bracket but the prop and shaft were bare. I didn't have her in the water long enough to test how well that works and I just wondered if Velox can be used on the (stainless steel) propshaft as well as on the other (bronze) sterngear ?

Thanks,

Boo2

Velox works on my plastic log impeller and I see no reason why it would not work on a stainless steel shaft. the only problem I forsee is the adhesion between the two. Not sure if Velox' own primer is recommended for stainless but worth checking first.

Good point re the primer. In case anyone else is interested I asked Navigator's Marine and got the following reply :
Thanks for your e-mail regarding Velox primer. This is principally for bronze and similar non ferrous metals however it is commonly used on stainless shafts although it will not make a perfect bond.

For the ultimate performance on stainless props and shafts the recommendation is to use a two pack primer Such as International Interprotect over-coated with Velox primer followed by three coats of Velox Plus antifouling

I may just leave my prop shaft this year and see how the Velox does on the prop and P-bracket. It's not the easiest of stuff to apply but it went on the prop OK and I'm doing the P-bracket later today.

From memory I thought ordinary copper based antifouls should not be used on P brackets. I use velox on P bracket and micron extra on SS shaft.

Be pleased to know what is right

I can't think of any reason why not. I have used conventional antifouling paints on my prop and P-bracket for the past 20 years, no problems so far. Are you sure you are not confusing with aluminium saildrives?

Thanks Yes I am confused as to whether I am confused!!

I remember saildrives but thought the bronze of P drives as well which I now can't understand once I consider it as bronze is mainly copper with tin as an additive IIRC!!

Have just used Velox (for the 1st time...) on a new Brunton Auto prop and shaft.............

Re a p bracket, with suitable priming, why not, or use normal antifoul or harder such as Trilux?

Time will tell, and Navigators have asked for photos at seasons haul out.........

The problem with any coating on a shaft is that it makes it very hard to pull it out to change a bearing. (I had to do it on a beach in the Kimberley - no a/f so it slipped straight out and back in). The plus is of course lack of growth. Andrew
