Noticed on a tin of Brignola Jotun Sargasso Antifoul following statement.

"Good for application up to one month before putting in the water "

What is this about? Does it mean that if I leave my boat out of the water for more than 1 month after painting then the antifoul will not work or be less effective ?

If I put it in on time and then pull it out later for more than a month will the same happen ?

I think that the teflon ones do not have any time limitation. Like international and Hempel have those products.

Not so...

[ QUOTE ]
Most Anti foul paints have to be applied just before the boat is launched again.

[/ QUOTE ] No, that's not correct. Most International and Blakes products allow up to 3 months before launching. SeaJet allows 6 months. International Micron allows 12 months. International Optima has an indefinite time before launching.

Re: Not so...

Yes quite so, however they do recommend that the paint is not allowed to dry out for more than a month! because they work better, this has been so for many years, but I do agree that the newer paints are less restrictive. In the case of "catmandoo" he says that this is stated on his tin therefore what I have advised is correct would you not agree?

No...

No, I don't agree. Manufacturers quote maximum immersion times based on their products' ability still to perform satisfactorily. I'm not aware of manufacturers recommending "that the paint is not allowed to dry out for more than a month" - indeed this would be contrary to their stated max immersion times. Max immersion times tend to be reduced in hot climates, and the antifouling mentioned by catmandoo was Jotun Brignola - an Italian brand - so that's perhaps why that particular paint had a recommended 1-month max immersion time.

Re: No...

I can assure you manufactures also quote maximum time allowed from application to immersion. International Cruiser Uno state on the tin that the recommended time of applying before immersion is no longer 3 months. If I remember correct this comes done to about a month if the average temp is above 25 degrees Celsius.

And your point is...

I'm getting confused now. I said that "Most International and Blakes products allow up to 3 months before launching", and you disagreed saying that "International Cruiser Uno state on the tin that the recommended time of applying before immersion is no longer 3 months". Forgive me, but what's the difference?

Re: And your point is...

You're right to be confused I misunderstood what you were saying you don't agree to. It's too late and it's a Saturday night?

I've never fully subscribed to the belief that the PBO forum largely consists of people who don't know what the [--word removed--] they're on about, but posts like yours do make me wonder if I need to review my position.
