This year I'm going to do a patch job on the antifouling. Next year it's all coming off but I have run out of time this winter. In the main its ok but some patches are peeling. The fin keel is the worst and large chunks of accumulated antifoul have peeled. what can I use to fair the keel and some of the hull patches before applying this years coats?

Thanks!

What ever you do now you will find that as you apply this years coat it will lift off more patches of the old stuff.

Then you have to mix the newly generated flakes up with the fresh paint so that it all sticks back down again. The result is best not inspected too closely.
Next year when you "have run out of time" again the result will be even worse and so on!

Eventually you will find the time to remove it all ... but about the time you get to the point of no return you will realise what a big mistake it was to try and strip it all off.

A/F coming off keel

Although you do not say I am guessing that the keel is made of cast iron and it is rust under the paint that is causing it to flake off. If it is a fibreglass keel disregard ...
You need to grind the spot down to metal and treat it with rust stopper of some sort before replacing the a/f.
There have been many threads on this forum on treating rust.
If the flaking is on f/g hull or keel I would say you need to grind the edges down to a smooth transition to stop further flaking then touch up with a/f paint and perhaps primer underneath.
Yes certainly stripping old a/f is a terrible job consider getting a professional to do it. good luck olewill

Next year it's all coming off but I have run out of time this winter.

Save up your pennies this year and pay someone to blast it all off & seal the keel when they do it.

As for what you do this year - do whatever you have been (not) doing in the past & allowing it to get into its current state - i.e slap a bit more on like you did last year.....

and the year before..

and the year before.....:D :D

I have thought about it but have never had all my antifoul stripped back in 20 years of sailing. I find that at the end of the season or beginning of the next there is so little left I just spray off and recoat.
I have used cheap antifoul and expensive 2 season jobs like International Micron X.
None lasts 2 seasons.
All have been two coat roller applied.

maybe I do not put enough on but I always use more than the various calulators tell you to use. Experimenting with Tiger Extra at the moment.

Having said this the antifoultthe end of the season is exhausted with furry growth on it. Can't see how it can last 2 seasons.
