It seems common knowledge that Altex No. 5 Plus doesn’t work in Sydney harbour. Can anyone recommend an alternative that copes with high nutrient water like ours?

Many thanks.

Jotun's Seaquantum Ultra

Hempel's Globic

Two generous coatings applied by roller with the excess as a third coating on the leading edges and waterline. You should get 2 years life - or that's what I was achieving on Pittwater. However most AF relies at least in part on your using the yacht regularly and driving her hard (so getting a decent water flow over the hull). If she sits idle for a couple of months and sea temperatures are high then you are moving down the slipper slope at an increasing speed.

You may find difficulty sourcing them as they are for professional (whatever that means) use only. But AF is not cheap money talks and your powers of persuasion (if you are applying yourself) will be a great investment.

For the prop - Velox or one of the silicone finishes, Prop Speed or Prop One (don't be clever - follow the instructions precisely). My memory is failing but I think Velox was retailed by a company, here (in Oz) called Prop Paint and it would be useful if you Google 'Vyv Cox' (a member here) as he has a description of his use of Velox (in the Med).

Not sure if available down there but Scrubbis fills the gap if the boat isn’t regularly used.

I suggest much the same advice applies to UK waters too. Have a look at what the fishing boats use and try and get hold of some of that. It seems to be Hempel Globic or Olympic as far as I can see.

In tests I conducted Globic was demonstrably better than Olympic - and demonstrably more expensive.

Jotun's Seaquantum Ultra was used by Maersk (and also expensive).

I valued the quality more than the extra cost

I use Hempel Globic or Olympic which I can get cheaper as a left over from big ship left over from a local boat yard supplier also in the southern hemisphere

I last used Olympic about 6 or 7 years ago which I bought as leftovers from a local fishing boat. It was very good and lasted about three years before performance tailed off, then another year before I repainted it when a few barnacles and other crap had appeared. It may have been a previous version of Olympic compared to the current stuff. I now have Jotun Seaforce 60 on and it's OK but not as good as the Hempel was. It only comes in 20 litre drums so it makes sense to get three or four owners to club together if possible. That way it is also much cheaper than buying 5 litres of yacht paint!

Olympic comes in at least 2 different formulations, denoted by a different number. I had 2 of the formulations and could not differentiate the 2 but Globic was significantly better then either. 20l drums are very heavy and take patience to mix, they are really not very convenient for amateur use. When I started using the Jotun product I had them deliver me a 20l of AF and a new empty drum, once mixed (it settles) I decanted into the new drum which made the whole exercise much more manageable. My preference was the Jotun product - but AF is extremely fickle, what works well one season does not work well the next and simple changes in weather pattern (more or less rain, impacting run off from fertilised fields etc) if kept in a marina all impact results.

I have for a long time used Jotun the kind a chandler will sell in 4l tins . I don't know if it is good compared to others. I know on the Swan I expect to get about 6 weeks form new pant job beopre I brush off the slime. After 3 months barnacles are a real problem. I race once per week but on a small boat bottom cleanliness is important. So I will get into a regime of scrubbing in water weekly. Being as harsh as necessary. after 6 months much of the a/f has gone and I pull the boat home for winter and another 2 coats of a/f.
Perhaps OP is expecting too much of his a/f. But by all means try another brand or type of a/f. ol'will

The results are visual - you can draw your own conclsuions. This was some time ago, formulations change

It was the most complicated test I have ever conducted. Testing AF is prone to environmental issues you don't anticipate nor can quantify. View the results as a very broad brush.

But I was happy to subsequently use Globic and Sea Quantum longer term.

Thanks to all for your advice. Very much appreciated.

and @Neeves, thanks for your welcome. I'm pleased to be part of the select group! I'm moored at Balmoral so let me know if passing.

If you have issues buying either Globic or Sea Quantum and are member of a yacht club with a boat yard you may find the manufacturer's will sell to the yard and then they re-sell to you. I was able to buy direct, I'm very persuasive :) , but a different rep from Jotun was less impressed (I think he feared retribution from regulatory authorities). I don't know what component demands they be 'professional use only' - but I found them, either - excellent (and I'm still fit and healthy). Downsides, they are not cheap and sometimes stocked in large drums. Jotun used to supply me wth a large drum, almost impossible to lift - and 2 smaller drums/pails into which I could decant.

Attitudes were inexplicable as both suppliers knew I was writing for leisure sailing mags - so why make the stuff available if you are not meant to sell, unless to professionals.
