Hi all.
I've read loads of opinions re the cheapest/best antifoul in Essex etc, but I'm wondering what the opinions are for the Clyde area. The fouling last season was minimal, so I'm tending toward the cheapest available...e.g. Compass. But what do you other Clyde cruisers use?
Thanks

Cliff

I used Blakes Tiger Extra last year. Very little fouling - based at Kames on deep water swinging mooring.

So much so didn't need a pressure wash. Just rubbed down with P60 wet and dry used wet.

This year my supplier gave me Blakes Ocean Performer (two pack) to try for the same price as Tiger Extra. He said it didn't sell very well up here and would I try it and report back.

Hopefully it will be no worse than the Tiger Extra with which i was very pleased.

Donald

Used XM Cruising round the corner on The Solway Firth and ended up with 30,000 Barnacles on my bottom from my drying mooring.

Still they had to find somewhere to live!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Trying Cruiser Uno this time.

I've had boats on the Clyde (Largs marina) for 8 years now and I use whatever is cheapest each year - but give her two good coats with extra on leading edges. I usually lift out only once every two years and I've never had a problem with fouling yet. Lifted out a month ago after being in for 22 months and a pressure wash was all that was required (think it was XM Cruising last time).

It really depends also how long the boat is in the water for. I only apply 1 thin coat with a bit extra on leading edges.

Boat is in for 6 months only - but is used extensively every weekend + four weeks cruising. We also indulge in a bit of racing - don't laugh, I know its a Moody - but we usually do OK in the CCC stuff.

Two coats is usual for the length of time you keep the boat in the water, but is overkill if the intended immersion time is less than a year. The a/f just builds up otherwise.

2.5 l is more than enough for my size of boat (34')

Hmmm..
Thanks guys. I'm tending toward the Compass stuff... but others I know of are applying Cruiser Uno. I'm only in the water for 6 months or so...mark you, if this weather doesn't improve it'll be shorter still this year!! Perhaps a snow plough on the bow might be a better idea!

For most areas on the Clyde, the cheaper stuff is fine. When I first started sailing, based in Rothesay, in my innocence I used two coats of International Cruiser per season. This cost an arm and a leg. I now use one coat of Seago (XM?) basic stuff. This costs not much.

Used International UNO for the last two seasons out of Largs after several seasons on regular International. First year was o.k. but this year got a lot of surface cracking after had dried out for about three months. Patching it up but suspect the lot will have to come off next winter - watch this space!
