I have a new boat and the legs do not have any protection on them. Is it ok to leave them or should I do something. Im told there is a new spray that is clear and this is a good way to protect them.
Give them some A/F, but I wouldnt worry too much what they look like, they ll be underwater and/or covered in muck!
Two sprays are Blakes ,or International Trilux Proposhield, both in a few dark colours. About £15-20 a can, one for each drive.
Used Int'l last year, which seemed ok, rather than brilliant, and ended up with one leg of each this year (as I couldnt get another Intl can!), so lets see which is better.
You can paint on normal Trilux a/f, as its ok on aluminium, but you might think it looks a bit like icing on a cake!
If you put a thick wipe of wax around the transom around the legs, you dont need to panic too much about overspray, as it will just wipe off.
And dont spray over the anodes.
If its brand new legs, I'd give them a very light going over with a sanding pad, just to take the gloss off a bit. Dont want all that expensive a/f to fall off.Might say something on the can
Its like a slightly thicker car paint spray, so I think it will stick pretty well.
The Intl seemed thinner.. the Blakes was quite thick.
Abrade with a 120 grade abrasive and then wash down with detergent and remove all debris. Apply 2 or 3 coats of Interprotect Epoxy Primer. Apply 2 coats of Trilux antifouling.
fwiw ...
If you're in a hasher enviroment, like the med, do try and obtain med strength leg a/f.
I used inter uk standard stuff prior to relocating last Spring and it proved to be pretty poor as did the AWL Gold.
A browse in the chandlery in Port and I saw there was a 'Med Strength' version available. To date much better.
