The long shaft outboard engine on my Kingfisher 20 is fixed in a well all season. It collects barnicles and so I think I should paint it with antifoul before launching next season. Is this what most people do? Also since only a small amount of antifoul is required { I think it may need to be different to the ordinary Blakes cruising antifoul I normally use on the boats bottom} and of course only a small uneconomic amount will be needed. Should one's winter service engineer be able to offer this service for a reasonable sum?

Mercury do a suitable one in small quantities, as do most O/B makers, probably the same stuff, non cuprus in either spray or brush on, it's not really a mechanic's job though, more like the "yard boy" so should be cheap enough if you don't want to do it.

Do not apply antifoul direct. You must use an acceptable primer base coat first then af if you have to.

I would recommend lifting it from well as much as possible in any case as you will get less internal corrosion and fouling.

The original paint coating must be maintained in good order. Not sure what they put on outboards... nothing very special as far a I know. Outdrives etc I believe have an epxoy coating.

An antifouling compatible with aluminium must be used ... not the ordinary types which contain cuprous oxide.

International Trilux and Hempel ( Blakes) Mille drive are two suitable antifoulings. The former is available in smallish tins... it is also commonly used for the boot topping. The latter is available in spray cans

Bad news IMHO for an outboard to be permanently immersed
