Morning,

i need to get my hull antifouled! its been done in the past and the boat lives on the water so its a necessary evil! any suggestions on best antifoul for a fast planing hull based on the hamble?

also, do you protect the outdrive? its covered in weed and barnicals now, is there an antifoul for the outdrive too???

i think im going to struggle to make 35 kts now as its been on the water for 1 month since it was last lifted and scrubbed and its FILTHY!!!

Thanks
Z1ppy.

I've been using Seajet Shogun in the river for years and found it to be the best of the lot. Even had it last two years! As to the drives, yes you can and either use Trilux or you can get a spay on version. Not as good as keeping the stuff of the hull IMO but you will get build up on the drives in the Hamble. And on the props, but you use the boat a fair bit so that helps. Other thing is take it over to the Sealift in Cowes - very good at keeping the hull clean.

Sealift is a good option but to be honest, the stuff thats been on there before has gone blue and looks really bad so think it needs a fresh coat. Other problem is i am looking for white!

As for using the boat lots, that would be nice!! hopefully the weather plays ball from monday as i cant make it out this weekend now!

Outdrive is a Bravo 1 and has not been antifouled before!

I used Mercruiser drive antifoul up to the top of the bottom section of the drive and clear antifoul spray above this, again lasted a full season with no weed but a few barnicles are unavoidable. I dont think it matters if you do antifoul the whole drive, avoiding the ss bits and anodes but they look a pig when done, just like volvos, LOFL

Hope that helps

We have been very impressed with this

http://www.discountantifoul.com/

Tried it this year after getting a good deal on it at a boat jumble and it is excellent stuff. The boat has been in the water since the beginning of March with this stuff applied and no sign of any growth at all and the colour is as good as when we relaunched her. We have done 150 hours of use as well so it appears to be hard wearing.

We dont bother antifouling the drive we just brush any growth off once a month.

Did mine in coppercoat last September, it was a massive job at the time stripping it down to gel coat but when it was back in the water went from 25knots (before) to 35knots and has maitained that speed since.

Used to use Interspeed ultra (hard antifouling) every year but switched to Shogun 033 last 3 years (erodable and is good for up to around 30knots and £60/tin) works well for me hull never gets any nasties or any build up of antifoul needing blasting or scraping. Props are a different story, I havent come across anything thats any good yet

Found the outdrive spray pretty hopless, but Trilux paint on the o/d seems much more effective (and alot cheaper!!).

thanks for your replies. will try and get some this week! sea shogun 033 is not in white but Sea Emperor 034 is so may give that a try!

it has been suggested that dark antifoul works a lot lot better than light in shallow waters - certainly a lot of informal testing in Poole has indicated this.

seems logical as most growth needs light, and reflected light helps (growth)

trilux etc on the drive basically provides a scrubable surface - but the more you scrub the faster you need to re-do. there's the square root of bu**er all 'anti-foul' element in just about any of these pleasure craft coatings now adays. copper is the principle active ingredient - not weedkiller.
