So, boat bought just over 4yrs ago and survey revealed it had been coppercoated (or a.n.other similar) at some time in its life. Boat is late 80's. About 2 years ago I bought some coppercoat and touched up a few areas (simply rolled on) and in those areas growth is minimal. However .............. the majority of the hull does not stay clean ..... at all really. I have jetwashed (and that wasn't necessarily easy) and then given the hull a good going over with coarse paper in an orbital sander. I would like to say that the sanding made a difference, but I cant say it did.

My question is, should I be doing more than that to hopefully "re-activate" the copper ?. Hopefully someone will have direct experience ?

Many thanks.

I had a system on my last boat called Copper Plus. It wasn't great. You may have this system. We had to burnish the bottom twice a year to keep it working. Hoping that the new coppercoat on new boat will be less demanding

I have copper coat, 10 years on its still working no problems. You can try light sanding with 180 wet and dry to reveal new copper, it might work.

A bit unfair to name coppercoat in the thread title when you don't know what copper based coating you have.

I've got coppercoat and it works well. Hadn't moved the boat for 6 months (long story) and it had loads of growth on it, after motoring out of the berth Pixie was leaving a brown trail in the water behind her as it fell away. Still a little furry, but good for 12 months in the water :)

It does not work for ever - quoted life expectancy is around ten years. Your boat is around thirty years old - how long has the Coppercoat been on?
