Having read a number of articles on anti fouling, one comment always appears "make sure the new stuff is compatible with the old"

So how does one do that then ??? I haven't got a clue what make was used before on my boat so cant ask anyone. Do I have to buy a tin (at mega cost) paint a little bit and see what happens ..... the symptoms of incompatibility are what ?? blisters, flaking, or could it be more subtle than that - does the reaction take place when in the water.?

guess the best idea is to buy some, paint it and forget it till next year.

If you really can't find out what is on there already, then the safest way forward is to apply a barrier coat before you apply the new antifouling. Most A/F maufacturers also market a suitable product. Or, if you're a tight wad like me, apply a coat of metalic pink primer instead. Compatible with all commonly used A/Fs and a fraction of the price of the proprietary barrier coats.
