Anti-foul removal project - Bradwell

After getting Bonsella lifted out this year I explored the possibility of getting the hull cleaned by a contractor using the Farrow system. I then learned that Bradwell marina would only allow this procedure to take place at the end of the yard thus requiring another lift and move. Before this bad news, my neighbour and I had negotiated a small discount on the unit rate for the job based on the lower cost for the contractor coming to the site once to work on two boats. Sadly, the cost of the extra lift and move made the whole idea uneconomic so Bonsella will go back in with some fresh anti-foul over the existing scabby build-up for yet another year.

Just thought I’d share this bit of learning about thinking about these jobs before getting lifted out. I'm happy to share details of the quote if anybody wants to PM me – it’s probably not fair to the contractor to publish the details in the forum.

Some 4 years ago I took all my old antifouling off using a Tungsten Carbide hand scraper. It was a long boring job, about 15 man hours for a 27 feet fin keeled hull but well worth it. It is surprisingly satisfying between the bouts of boredom. I found that the antifoul came off quite easily with the Tungsten Carbide scraper and only needed a light tap with the heel of my hand to remove a several inches at a time.

It may be a solution that would satisfy Bradwell Marina as the old antifoul drops to the ground and can be swept up and placed in an appropriate skip. I did mine at Sutton's Wharf at Rochford where the cement plant next door dust quickly covers over any excess blue antifouling paint on the ground.

I also had a good experience with the tungsten hand scraper this fall - a special design which could be connected to a cheap domestic vacuum cleaner, bought for this purpose. Not a visible stain on the gound. About 10 hours for 32 sailing boat.

I did both my previous boat and Gladys when I bought them. I used Dilunett paint stripper, and again it wasn't too bad a job - but you do ned good protective gear...

I asked him about doing my countess , he wernt interested and said it wasn't worth doing , did it myself with carbide scraper in the end ........

I know that antifouling strippers are not well thought of but a mate of mine has had his 20 yr old boat treated this way at Bedwell's recently. The stripper was left on overnight and almost all the A/F washed off with a pressure-washer the next day. He plans to put another coat or two of epoxy to cover some minor blemishes and is very pleased with the job.

Anti fouling

I have a 27 foot sports boat I used a chemical paint remover last year, the stripper Is activated by moisture. When I put the boat back in the water. The anti fouling came off. So now I have spent the last three days stripping the bottom by hand.
