Etching primer

Probably the above.
Even if you do get it off, the surface is unlikely to be virgin gel coat.
Try a small area and see what the surface underneath is like and take it from there.
If surface not perfect, possibly paint with suitable white marine enamel?

This is what you'll end up with:

If you are serious about getting it off, go the sand blasting route. It's bloody hard work manually with orrible finish.

Just in case anyone is thinking as someone pointed it out before..That's bits of 30 odd years of **** on top of the gel coat I haven't gone down to the GRP under the gel coat....

....actually I have as the scraper was a tad sharp and chipped the gel coat but it's not even half the size of your little finger nail.

Acetone. Available from most fibre glass suppliers.

I took off layers of AF and primer using acetone before fitting a keel guard.

But, be warned, before applying primer and AF to a boat for the first time, the gel coat is usually etched with sandpaper to create a key for the paint.

I say Major, what is this keel guard that you speak of?

One of my little jobs is to replace the rollers on my trailer as they seem to have taken a hammering...But my boat was never intended to be on a trailer and although the keel looks pretty sturdy I do wonder if I could do something else to cut down on the wear and tear of her bottom.

Make sure you know what you are trying to remove!
Sounds as though you have reached an epoxy barrier applied to the hull when new, no mater what you do with an AF striper it will not work and will require grinding off, I would repaint in white AF.
Have you recently purchased?, surveyor should have picked this up if you have.

I'll help you. ;)

I did walk into that one didn't I :o

No good for me...mentions something about no good if your boat's weight is taken on the central rollers...

I shall have to have a dive underneath when the weather gets a bit better to get a really good look at the keel.

Hopefully some new rollers on the trailer will be all that's needed..much easier.
