I am almost ready for the season having done lots of small and larger jobs on my new (to me) Boat. I still have to antifoul the outdrive and gimbal housing however. It is a Mercruiser Alpha 1 gen 2 unit and I have bought a spray can of International VC Prop-O-Drev Primer and a spray can of Trilux Prop-O-Drev Antifoul Paint.

I have read the instructions about sanding and preparation and know about the 1 inch gap at the hull. I was wondering if some of you who have used these products can give me any tips etc and what I need to mask off and not paint. Here is a pic of my outdrive. I assume the stainless pipes need to be masked and or course the shiny bit of the rams.

Here are some of my Questions:

1) Anodes (Mask off don't paint)
2) Stainless pipes which i will grease after painting the rest (Mask off don't paint) ?
3) Shiny bit of rams (Mask off don't paint)
4) Water Holes (Mask off don't paint)
5) Remove dowl Fins these are plastic Or should these be painted ?
6) Mask off around around boat hul with cardboard/Newspaper to prevent over spray
7) What about inside where the prop is fixed should I stuff with newspaper or paint. There is an anode in there
8) What about the nuts paint or mask ?

Never done this before

Your opinions appreciated.

Regards

Dennis

Always found the spray to be totally useless; Trilux paint a/f- you can but smaller tins- seems pretty good. Trilux does not contain copper, so no need to the gap around the transom shield. Paint everything that is black, I would think!

The 30mm gap is between the out drive and regular anti foul paint on the hull so still applies with Trilux as it is used to fill that gap. Have always used the brush on myself.
Your other points: (at least how I have been doing them!!)
1) Anodes (Mask off don't paint)
- Correct or paint before changing them so no paint on new anodes.
2) Stainless pipes which i will grease after painting the rest (Mask off don't paint) ?
- Never worried too much myself about getting paint on the stainless pipes, it falls off pretty quick anyway and wont harm them.!
3) Shiny bit of rams (Mask off don't paint) - Just paint with the rams fully in.
4) Water Holes (Mask off don't paint).
- As long as you know where they are it is easier to poke them clear after painting.
5) Remove dowl Fins these are plastic Or should these be painted ?
- No need to remove, just paint them after priming with something like Primocon
6) Mask off around around boat hul with cardboard/Newspaper to prevent over spray
7) What about inside where the prop is fixed should I stuff with newspaper or paint. There is an anode in there
- Dark areas like that don't seem to get fouled much, no need to mask or make a special effort to paint
8) What about the nuts paint or mask ?
- Like the pipes, not worth masking

Hope that helps.

Here are a couple of pics of the leg done. The cans you buy don't cover as much as they say. The primer can only did one coat and I had to buy 2 cans of the top coat (Trilux) to get the 3 coats required. £80 in all to do the whole leg.

I think I will do that next time. New to all this and when I bought it I thought it only came in spray cans. Tim and paint next time. Also means less masking up

I dont think so. Trilux 33 seems pretty effective and PropO Drive seems to be barnacle food ;)

I hope it is not Barnical food as I have just spend £80 on it and am now off to put the last 2 coats on.......... I will just have to wait and see
