some of you may know I am not a great fan of anti-foul. My circumstances mean that frequent grounding and opportunities for a bit of recreational scrubbing mean that it is hardly worth using. I also have doubts about what it is doing to the rivers and estuaries we sail in - much worse than a flushing bog if you ask me?

not that anyone will of course.

the new boat has old abrading antifoul on the bottom of the hull - very happy to let that fade away until I get a nice smooth easy to scrub gelcoat slowly revealing itself.

however, the previous owner has put a thick line of blue boot topping on the hull. I am quite happy with the look of it

but as it slowly leaves my life it will leave a mess behind - not least on my clothese every time I touch the boat or jill climbs aboard after a swim

any suggestions chaps......

Dylan, you're making a mistake that most of us make in that you are assuming antifoul paints contains something nasty to stop horrible little creatures growing on the hull of a yacht. If only this were true

However, our record for fitting and using holding tanks is poor in this country. Yes I appreciate fish pooh in the sea but there isn't many of them left now compared to us.

Nice video, you will be wanting a kite cam next http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKGupz_9mGc

Pete

if you say that is true then I should believe you

however, despite having the slug antifoul free for three summers when I scrub it at low tide the surrounding water still turns red

are you saying no harm done?

doesn't look good to me

whereas I know anything that goes down the loo of last resort will have biodegraded within weeks

I deduce then the boottop is not a hard type of antifouling or an ordinary gloss paint but the normal eroding kind of antifouling.

At least it's accessible without crawling about under the boat so carefully scrape it off.

The hook type scrapers, what you and I once knew as Skarsten scrapers, seen to be the popular choice, especially the long handled /two handed ones ( Bacho ??)

I've seen an entire Leisure 17 stripped bare with an old plane iron, kept sharp.
It's something I would definitely suggest trying especially if you have one handy.

You might also consider one of the electric scrapers but for a relatively small easy job perhaps not worth the capital investment.

If you like the appearance of the boot top re-apply it using a good quality gloss paint.

I just got rid of three years worth with International Interstrip. Not cheap but less backbreaking. Not particularly efficient either, but like I said, less elbow grease required. Smells like something really nasty but seemed to leave my both my paintwork and skin as they were before and I'm still breathing normally. Takes about three times as much as it says on the tin.

That looks really good.
I thought the launch trolley a great system.
Not sure about the multi-colour sail but the red ones are spot on.

You'll just have to get used to a bow wave.

Can't you just scrub the boot-topping off. The only time I used eroding antifoul above the water line it spent it's short life trying to jump off.

ghoster

it is a ghoster for the other rig

I have no roller reefing on the gunter at the moment

that is on the Bermudan rig

the plan is to keep the rig in working condition so that we can get David Thomas who designed the boat to sail Katie L on the same day with two different rigs.

So I could not put too much tension on the foresail

it sailed really well under just the main - bit like a broads boat

as for the colour of the sails

I liked the slug with a white main and red genoa

although brown ones would look good

But the sails are in great nick - the main has a small area of damage in the middle and the genoa has obviously spent some time in the opne air

the boom and the gaff stow in the cabin and the experts tell me that with the help of a strong friend you can get the mast in there as well

some tweaking to be done to get the rig right

Origo arrived today

still lacking a 4 stroke outboard
