The boat next to ours is breeding barnacles. Essentially, his engines are shagged, so the boat is for sale, so there's no point in him doing anything about the barnacle fest on on his hull.

Soo, anyone anyidea bout what to do to repel barnacles? Do the ultrsound thingies work? Only other idea i can think of is a um long weighted sunlight-proof skirt all around the boat when unoccupied, which might get messyor expensive or both.

I suggest patrolling the boat armed with a 12 bore shotgun - if you see any of em swimming across - let em have it with both barrells .....

In the 70s the big deal was ultra sound, whether it worked or not I don't know. It all got started because the USN had a ship in dry dock and couldn't understand why there were clear patches on the hull. On investigatng they found that those spots coincided with shelfs where Sailors were playing their portable radios. So! If you leave a radio on radio 2 with strategically placed speakers attached to the hull... who knows?

I've got a pal with a boat down in Wales who manages to procure commercial-grade antifoul for his yacht - it's the stuff they put onto tankers and it's completely illegal to use it on his yacht (gives off tin I think?) but then again it lasts 5 years between lift & scrubs - must be bad news for your barnacles!

why is it a problem? is growth so bad in med?

once (mebe twice) a year quick lift and scrub, sorted, no? u gotta do it once for aunty fowl and anodes etc?

or, praps, round the boat (so need about 160 odd feet), submerged say 2 foot, long length of small plastic pipe, every foot or so a little tiny ickle hole drilled into the pipe, hole maybe 0.05 mm, block off one end, pump into the pipe from the other end all the spare chemicals on the boat, depsol snake oil, hlb snake oil, old petrol from deck washing, swmbo perfume, toilet cleaner etc, would kill all nasty boat slowing critters.

Re: Tabasco

Met a bloke many years ago that added a bottle of Tabasco to a tin of anti-foul. One half of his boat was done with this mixture and the other half was done with conventional anti-foul.

He said that he had solved the problem of the barnacles and other growths but needed to work on getting the anti-foul to stick to his hull for longer than a few months.

Yes, fouling is worse than the Solent according to my experience. My boat lost 7knots off its top speed between January and August and when I had it lifted it was covered in these small but extremely adhesive barnacles which even the pressure washer could'nt remove. They had to be scraped off the hull by hand and the yard used hydrochloric acid on the sterngear to remove them

Re: hm

This looks quite a good idea. But it won't get the props done will it.

As Deleted User says, it is fine in the uk - much worse over in the grown-up deep water med with maneating mussels. When i said the neighbour is bredding barnacles - the coral and barnacle layer is 2 inches thick!.

Wot we do over 'ere is to 'ave a diver go down and clean the bottom monthly during the summer months. Otherwise, the stern gear in partic becomes very inefficient due to barnacle and worm coral growth. For about $50 a time it's worth it in fuel savings.

I agree. But at 300euros a time for a french diver on a 50 footer it's bit blimmin steep! Also a liftout and pressure wash is over 1500. Hence i have divegear and a very wide scraper...
