The telescopic antenna on my Sony multi-band portable radio has broken off at the swivel fitting. It's kind of usable, but I'm thinking of converting it to a fixed radio with a proper reception antenna. I don't want anything complicated, but preferably something a little more efficient than a bit of wire hanging off the spreaders. I've never really used the radio to listen to MF broadcasts, or used its SSB facility for navtex, etc, but that's what I'm thinking about rather than normal FM radio channels. Thoughts?

As I understand it, just about any length of wire will give you a better reception than the telescopic antenna.

The longer the better, copper is best, you can buy it enamelled from radio shops or on ebay for a few pounds.

How resistant to corrosion it will be.... I do not know?!

Hope that helps.

ICF-7600G? I broke the whip in the exact same place. Replacement was simple as can be - if you can operate a Phillips screwdriver you can replace the whip... (easy for me to say as I'm a broadcast engineer and a Sony Parts shop is close at hand)

I'd look for an original part -- $15 maybe £10

best of luck,

Yes that's the receiver. But unfortunately it broke below the hinge, in the set itself, and although I've had it apart I can't find an easy way of repairing / replacing. At present the old antenna is horizontal and held in place as a push fit with elastic bands!
