Please ignore the dates on the pictures the camera was a little confused.

If it wasn't for the colour of the water, and the fact that the pic file names include 'Pacific crossing', I could be persuaded to say you were in Half Acre Creek, off the Medway! But that can't be right...

Not even close. This is very exciting usually people come up with the answer straight away when I think it is hard. I thought this one would be easy.

Clues: It is not what the ECF would normally consider the East Coast. Labels on pictures can be wrong.

I assume the container terminal is where the old Panama Canal Yacht Club used to be.

I really enjoyed my stay in Colon (despite it's reputation). The yacht club was a great place for a cold beer & a cheap meal.

Here's a little video clip from 1996.

That's correct. There is a marina [Shelter Bay Marina] now in the NW corner of Christobal Port, where the old American Fort Sherman was. It was probably there in your day but little used. It is well isolated from Colon which is probably not a bad thing. It is extremely well run, has good cheap beer, adequate cheap wine, good cheap food, pretty waitresses. Good showers, good pool, adequate laundry, good WIFI. Good chandler, but poor grocery facilities. The marina management provide a bus in to Colon twice a day which allows you to stock up at the outstanding REY supermarkets.

What I couldn't understand while Colon has such an awful aspect and reputation, my wife and I could walk around Panama City on the other side of the isthmus in complete safety being constantly helped by the local inhabitants and welcomed into non tourist type eating places. I stopped at the Flamenco Marina on the other side rather than the Balboa Yacht Club and that was a major mistake as the facilities were non existent but as our main requirement was to top off our fuel and water I suppose it met our needs. Everyone in Panama City seemed to be very helpful with the exception of the major 5* hotels which couldn't care less and refused to speak english to my wife when she was enquiring about tours.

Agree. Panama City seemed safe & the local taxi drivers very friendly & helpful. Balboa Yacht club were very friendly though the moorings were quite rolly with passing shipping & getting a waterline coating of heavy oil was a common occurence. In general, a good place to stock up & get repairs done - bought an outboard there at a good price too.

The whole Panama Canal thing from Colon through to Balboa was a terrific experience & quite unforgettable.
