Another Tragic Incident in the Aegean

I’d prefer to rely on the evidence of my own eyes than be influenced by self appointed judge and jury organisations whose motivations and funding are anything but transparent. As I said today on another thread there are reasons to be concerned about current events in Turkey but can any reasonable person have anything but admiration for the treatment of almost 4 million refugees from Syria.

...funded under a deal with the European Commission under which Turkey is being paid EUR6 billion to look after these refugees, money which every EU citizen contributes to. This is in addition to the vast resources spent assisting refugees in the countries themselves.

There is no Disney Ending here, Europe is by and large doing as good a job as it can in the circumstances, and its citizens are rightly watchful that a hard-line is taken against criminality, racketeering, and fraudsters amongst the refugee intake.

Looks like we're never going to agree on this: I think your position endangers both vulnerable and genuine refugees and the law-abiding citizens of their host countries.

You of course disagree, it is probably best to leave it there.

€6B is small change in the context of the financial and social cost of hosting up to 4m refugees and the EU is not meeting it’s side of the deal

Turkey is going through tough times economically and people are starting to feel the pain. The presence of these refugees is making life more difficult for ordinary Turks. Don’t be surprised if Turkey withdraws from this agreement.

As far as I am aware, all of the "refugees" referred to in this original post, were safe from the war zone from which they were fleeing. They would have been given food, shelter, clothes and medical treatment in Turkey. What were they in flight of, to get from Turkey to Greece?

A life of more than years in a camp?

Nothing there about them being refugees.

Once safe from war they are economic migrants if they do anything other than go home once the shooting stops. The question thus becomes, why do muslims want to risk everything leaving muslim countries to get into countries where the laws are based on Christian traditions?

What a load of cobblers.

We fell asleep last night to the sound of helicopters and one particularly noisy coast guard cutter in the bay underneath our house. We had no idea what was going on but it was no surprise to wake up to this news this morning. So sad especially when small children are involved.

That article explains nothing about the background. Where they came from, where they were travelling to and why they were there in the Turkish Aegean. It all seems so odd when the southern Turkish coast is so much nearer the trouble spots of Syria or even N Africa. That would have been a better place to aim for and with much less risk, especially for children as Turkey is extraordinarily welcoming to migrants and refugees. Can you fill in the gaps?

Truthfully I don't think it matters where they originated. A 4 year old child dying is always a tragedy. It is also a tragedy that people are so desperate for a better life for themselves and their families that they are prepared to risk a perilous sea crossing at night in an overloaded inflatable boat.

All those questions matter and many more that might follow if you are interested in finding a solution to the misery and that needs to be done if you care about the deaths.

If your questions matter so much to you please feel free to investigate and explore the issue further, as you see fit. However please don't be so disingenuous as to imply I don't care about people dying in such tragic circumstances just because I don't share your idle curiosity.

You are living there, so surely you must have a very good understanding of this? Much better than me, in all probability. How can you not want to understand if you care? It is beyond me.
