Sorry Pete, it was one of a group if pics in a round robin email to swimbo from her *aunt. The email's now deleted though I saved the pic in my photobucket.

*hence my 'supposed' remark.

Hi to all,

That's Corinth canal ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corinth_Canal ) near Athens in Greece.

It is a 45 minutes drive from the center of Athens, and 30 to 90 minutes cruise from most marinas in Athens. It is a great experience to pass Corinth canal.

pic taken from the (old I guess) car/pedestrian bridge connecting mainland to Peloponesse, near the eastern end of the canal, looking west with the rail bridge in front of us.
Looks perfectly fine, the v.dark clouds and sky puzzles me a bit, but it's probably an just an odd day.

cheers

V.

I think the colours in the photo have been tweaked a bit but here's an video taken at the time http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SSf87y83W8. The ship is the MV Azur, from the defunct Festival Cruise Line, now sailing as the Royal Iris (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS_Royal_Iris). I've actually been through the canal and over it (from what I can recall there's a cafe at the side of the road bridge).

Note that the Azur's beam is 72ft which is just about the maximum for the Corinth canal. I believe most modern cruise liners are restricted to around 105ft so that they can transit the Panama canal. The later super liners have gone beyond this beam.
